Has anyone made their own sails? I have found a couple of web sites outlining the basic steps in making your own sails.

I was wondering if anyone has bother trying this and also if they have any suggestions on where to get sail cloth and the right equipment and fittings.

About a thousand years ago when I started sailing I fully intended to start making my own, so I started by modifying some old ones.
Found there is much more to sail making than meets the eye.
And the wife's sewing machine has never been the same since!!!
Windsurfing sails are probably the most technical of all, (not sure of this, I'm no sail maker) cause they have to deal with an unstayed mast. The variation in 3D shape caused by mast flexing is a real challenge. Guess you could use an old favourite sail as a patern to get the shape right.
But don't think you'd save much money, I'd only do it if I had an idea I wanted to try out.
