Hey Guys, I’ve just returned from my first trip to Coronation and it was incredible. This is my 2nd session windsurfing and what an amazing sport it is. I’ve currently got last years Starboard Freesex 108L which has been great for me but it time I moved to a smaller board. While in Coro I borrowed a friends 92L JP and got going straight away. I’ve heard mixed comments about the Starboard Evo 92L and wondering what would be better for my level. I’m 6’3 and 95kgs. I realise the Evo is quite short so maybe not so good for someone tall. Anyone got a 92L Evo? Any advice from the “professionals” will be much appreciated, Rgds Dave.
I am in a similar situation... 6'4 and 95kg... I assume when you mention the 92L JP you are talking about the '06 93l FreeStyle Wave. I would say the 92L Evo is more in the league of a 91L JP Realworld Wave.
Interstingly enough I used to sail a 105L Maui Project + AHD 260... until about 4 years ago when I tried out a 91L JP Freestyle Wave. I straight away went out and got one as a single allround board solution. I find these boards are very fast and you can use them in small waves if you got the weight to through them around. You can sail them comfortably with sail sizes 6.0 to 4.5. I now also have a 83L JP RealWorld Wave II which I primarily use in waves. It seems to work best with 5.4 down to 4.0. Despite the small volume the RWW is quite floaty as long as there is at least around 10knts of wind.
From my experience I would say go with a JP (which you already tried out) unless you get a chance to try the Evo for yourself. Would you spend $2.500 on a bicycle purely based on what other people recommended? I believe the same goes for windsurfboards.
There seem to be no tall/ heavy guys on the various windsurf magazin test teams therefore I always take their recommendations with a grain of salt. Especially when you read comments like "the board doesn't turn"...
BTW, went to Coronation back in November. Took along both both boards but ended up only using the 83 RRW... was simply more fun.
Thanks for your reply and your advice. I'm going to head out to 'Windsurfing Perth' and see what they have in store there. I'm told they are the best people to deal with when discussing JP's. I spoke to another mate and he seemed to think the JP would be the better allrounder, its great to hear it from yourself as well. I'll probably look at getting last year model 92L FreeStyle Wave. My biggest sail is a 6:1 so maybe thats pushing it. Cheers.
Just viewed the 93L JP 2006 FreeStyle Waveboard and my god it was hot!! Think I'm going to have to bite the bullet and make the purchase, just got to find the $2300!!!
I upgraded my 91Ltr 03 Freestyle Wave to the 93Ltr this season. I thought the 91 was a great board, the 93 is amazing! Planes early, plenty of pop and great top speed, good in small to medium surf! You won't regret getting one of these
Hey fancy see you here!! Going to pick the board up tomorrow lunch time. Think I'll demo it and take it to Lano for the weekend. By the sound of peoples comments its sounds like a great allrounder. Its like Christmas all over again!!
