I have an old F2 sputnik where the rear straps are right on the rails. I'm having real troubles getting my back foot in to the strap as I am used to the rear strap being in the middle of the board. I either catapult or the board carves into the wind. What am I doing wrong? I'd really appreciate any advice, thanks.

Head downwind, weight the harness, angle the sail forward, push with your front toes (not heel), try not to let the water drag your foot backwards as you stab for the strap.
It takes practice, you'll get there.

On straps that are placed close to the rail, you can get away with having a less snug fit -> try increasing the size of the strap.

As per both above replies.....definitely put weight on front foot, also by lifting back-foot heel and slide your toes into the strap (stops water-drag) without rushing it.
I had the same prob until last week. I was making a mess of my toes on my left foot by 'mashing' my foot into the strap, missing, rushing, sliding-out, couldn't workout why until I realised it was only when heading in one direction, with my 'weaker' leg at the front, once I transferred the weight forward onto my front foot, it all came together.

I slide my back foot back till it is just touching the back strap, then leaving my heal as the pivot point, TWIST my foot back so toes are able to enter strap on an angle...then push the foot in. Also, what helps is to widen the strap by using, for example the rear hole for the back of the strap, and the second-rear hole for the front of the back strap.
