Hi,

I need some advice on how smaller fin i could use on a 2004 JP freeride 158 liter board without loosing to much up wind performance.

I quite often have problems with my large fin getting caught on weed and having to walk out a fair way with my gear to make sure i do not bottem out when i start. Could I mabey get away with a large weed fin?

Also if anyone has any fins that may suit me let me know.

Cheers

Hi Bubs,
Give Chris D a call as I am pretty sure that he has a 36cm fin that would be suitable.

Hi Bubs,
Whats the width of your 158ltr?
I ride a Mistral 161 ltr board mostly and the ideal fin on larger sails is 50cm, and smaller and I just dont get planning early. That said I am currently using a 48cm freeride and it seems perfect.

I think it depends on the sail size, board width and wind strengh.I was for a while using a 38cm, but could never get on the plan unless it was blowing its head off!

its 80cm wide and i only use it in light winds when i cant use my 100 liter board.

im only 65kg though so i find i get away with many things that u olda blokes dont. would i be able to use a weed fin on a board that size? as that is one of the main problems for me with the large fin. my old man uses it quite a bit and his about 80 kg.

cheers

A good large weed fin will do the trick, I and Guys similar to me 90kg plus, all use 34cm + weed fins on our lightwind boards, with sails of 8mts plus, so a 34cm or 36cm weed will do the job for you.

SOS has some cheapies going for around $130, the best that I've heard of are Lessacher weed fins, I've never tried one, but OS guys on the Starboard forum rave about them.

yer the biggest sail i got is a 7.0 GTX. would i still get away with that? my old man aint the greatest sailor and needs a bit of up wind performance as he is new to what he calls a small board.

cheers

i have a 143 litre JP board and find it works just fine with a 46cm fin with a 7.5mt naish koa sail . i tried using a 38cm fin but found it difficult to get on the plane .

Hi Bubs,

The fin you got with the board is a 50cm jp freeride. This is spot on for this board. The fin that Chris Dimond has got is a Maui fin that has alot more rake. You will need to ask him about the price. Your dad is only picking up weed because he is not quite planning. We dont suffer from the same weed issues as the WA boys so I would save your $'s. If you go to small you wont get the board to unstick and it could hamper your dad's progression.
Cheers,
Chris

at goolwa near the barrage there is a huge problem with weed as its only waist deep and you can see the weed from the shore. so im considdering getting a weed fin even for when i use the board because the weed is very close to the surface of the water.

because we do quite a bit of sailing there when we hire a place for 1 or 2 weeks at a time it might make a differece.

i think getting a smaller fin would be usless because it would still get caught on the weed underneath and we would loose quite a lot of performance. If i get a new fin i think for the reasons we need it, a weed fin would be a much better bet.

thanx for the advice
