yarra bay
the runway
alot of syd sailors travel away from bot for southerlys
some go south
some go north....canton and the king of king lakes, budgy

taren pt in a SW is a very good speed run....

Nowhere in Sydney is flat in a Southerly. Georges River is about as flat as you'll find though and even that can have waist high chop in the middle. There can be quite a lot of tidal flow with Georges River, so keep that in mind. It's best in SW, but okay in a Southerly. No good in a SE though. Launch from Riverside Drive near St George Sailing Club. Other than that your only other option is Brighton Le Sands at Bestic Street in a S or SE.

You can try gunnamatta, but I would guess it's way too busy with boats and the ferry. It would also be extremely gusty (if at all windy) and horrible. The runs would be very short.

There's really not many options in a Southerly. Like Geewiz says, a lot of keen Sydney sailors travel to Budgewoi or Canton, North of Sydney, where it's pretty shallow and a lot flatter. Primbee, on lake Illawarra, is fantastic in a Westerly and well worth the drive.

If you were up for a drive on a weekend, you should definitely checkout Sanctuary Point near Jervis Bay. There's very flat, waist deep water for about 500-600 meters out so a very big area where you can standup. Plenty of locals windsurf there, so you'd never be alone. Great spot.

When you say Taren Point, do you mean the Northern side of the bridge ie Sandringham etc? I just had the impression that the northern side would get very choppy in a southerly? I'm probably being a little tentative as it's been a long time since I last sailed.

It is flat in a southerly but shallow water and urchins can be a problem. Make sure the tide is high enough!! I did leave several pieces of my knee there in the late 90's. :(

My understanding is that Kanahooka gets very choppy in a Southerly. Up near the sailing club is better because it's quite shallow up in that corner, but the deeper spots are still pretty choppy. I suggest launching from Primbee in a Southerly if you have a shallow weed fin... you're in 1-2ft of water for a few hundred meters out.

Thanks for the info. I'll check them out when I'm down in a few weeks. Don't have a shallow weed fin as yet so I'll probably stick around the sailing club.
