I was riding my pushie to work this morning and as your mind often meanders about whilst riding (mostly about sailing) I thought about balance!

Is good balance just someting you have or havn't got, can you do exercises to increase your balance ability? Would this help with your sailing to keep not only fit but peak balance! Somebody once told me fit people usually have hightened balance?

Something to think about while we wait for the next sailable breeze.

heres one little tip I used to use before every motocross race, do 1 legged squats to warm up your quads, but also to hold your balance, it kind of triggers your brain to think of balance, you may look like a bit of a yoga dork but it helps heaps. I actually do this at the beach before surfing, standing in the soft sand, I slowly squat down on one leg, hold the postion for a few seconds, get rid of all the wobbles, then do your other leg, give it a go. Like any gymnast, athlete, tradesman working on ladders, crane riggers etc, African woman carrying water jug on her head, you can train your brain to find better balance.

May the balance be with you.

Serious question: Is the other leg sticking forward or backward?

hands in front, open and apart, spare leg behind, dip about half way, dont blow your knee up though! slowly dip, keep focal point about 2-3m in front of you. Deep controlled breathes.

Then try it with eyes closed!

It is a great preperation tool, actually before a surf I go thru a 10-15 minute "home made yoga" routine on the sand, helps so much!

Havent tried it windsurfing yet, but thinking about it, it usually is that first turn or 2 you stuff up until you get your balance tuned, so Im sure it will help equally for windsurfing.

oh I just remembered, a buddy of mine races pro mx in Japan for Honda, he does his warm ups by standing on an excercise ball!

He said it took him a few months to master it!

Now he does slow 2 leg squats standing on the ball, I guess when his mx career is done he could do street performing in Surfers! Or roll logs down rivers in Canada..
