A couple of our younger crew need advice on harness line setup, what are the general guidelines

Length? Width? Position on Boom? Boom Height? Mast Foot position? ETC

hardie and i were talking about this on another topic and he decided to ask others
i got the old elbow measurement from a really old book from the libary hardman and yes it feels like im way too far away from the boom and to get the space between the loop i use the hang loose sign placing my thumb and little fingure on the boom for distance... and now that i think about it sometimes when it gets real bumpy i pop out of my lines but this seems like it because i have rope for lines what do the measurements mean in the shops on the harness lines you say you use 24' how do i know what length to buy
thanks hardman for starting this topic

Hi Green Room and Hard Man,

Harness line length is dependant on sail size/type and your height.
For example , when i sail slalom boards with big sails I use a seat harness, so need 24inch lines with the boom set at my chin. I want to be low so I can drive hard against the side of the board and fin.
When i am sailing my wave board i use a waist harness and have 22 inch lines ,which makes me more upright. This puts me in a better position for manouvres etc.
If you are tall, use longer lines, small use short lines.
Green room ,if you are getting back ache, it is probably due to your lines being to long, so you back is not straight. Shorten your lines and it should solve it. Next time you sail down SB, gve me a shout and i'll take a look at you set up.

cool simon it just seems like you know exactly whats going on
it makes alot of sence in what you are saying
i can now relate the back pain and long harness lines together
im 178cm im not sure in feet and inch maybe 5'10 5'11 ish
im using a seat harness and by what your saying simon sounds like i need 22" lines to get me more upright and closer to boom

HOLY SHEESH i just measured my lines just then and they are roughly 70cm (27.5 inches) WAY WAY WAY too long no wonder all is wrong!

i guess thats why rope is crap... first thing im doing tomorrow is getting me some harness lines

so this brings me to another question do wave sailors use waist harness... and slalom/race use seat harness

on the next weekend when wind is good ill let you know simon and come down to SB... look forward to then and thanks for your help simon and hardie

Wave sailors sail with less power, so need a more upright stance, thus a waist harness suits this stance. Also ,a higher hook so easier to hook in and out. Finally, and as a surfer you should appreciate this, imagine swimming in big surf with a bloody nappy on!!!!!!
Slalom sailors have more power, so need to sit down on the power more to keep the board from taking off, but tend to have longer runs ,so are not bothered by the lower hook.
There will always be sailors who buck the trend though, eg Kevin Pritchard wears a waist for Formula.

Simon, any tips on distance from boom pls for fast planing. I am a short arse at 5'5" and trying to set up for a 6.2m sail on a 210cm boom. Thanks.
