For a couple of seasons I had some pain around the front of hips area.
Just now I've figured that the harness bar was pushing on the spot that hurt.
I had a Liberty harness I got used. It was a bit big for me so I thought this was allowing it to roll into the pelvis / hip.
I've since changed back to waist. I'm liking the stance and feeling ok after seeing physio. He said it is not hips or pelvis but compressed ribs from lots of TOW, and good to go send again.

Has anybody had something similar? Do you accept some pain under harness from big sessions as you would other parts of the body?

thats why you don’t use a seat harness.

The harness is the bit of kit I spend the most time pondering over/trying as it the bit of kit which is up close and personal taking most of the load.

Go to a shop, try out as many harnesses as you can hanging your weight of them for as long as you can, don't be afraid to try kiting harnesses as they quite often offer more support and it's easy enough to change over the hook to a windsurfing one.

Torn dick, rock babies (kidney stone's apparently they hurt), lots of things to look forward to. A torn urethra would have been so nasty.
No idea how people keep going till their 80's. Could only be massive passion for the sport as it's got to hurt them surely. I'm 49, spring chicken in windsurfing.
Good session yesterday doing as physio fella told me, I released some tension for a nice little 30k session. I dig the zen vibe of big distance, I'd like to be doing 100k a day but don't want to wear me out.

Liberty was good. It got stuck in the mud once at Lake George and truly felt like a big diaper though.
Originally I was liking it as it did not ride up. Being skinny, waist was always riding up.
So when I thought it was causing me pain and went back to waist, I was conscious to try and stand out straight, super 7 style, pull the harness down rather than up. All that jazz, I think it worked. Not too much riding up. Now waist was feeling better than Liberty for me. I liked having hip movement back again.
I think Liberty might be better for massive big fella loads long time. And best suited to people that know their stance already, as it might teach bad habits. Little fella like me better off to have movement, adjust weight / waist for gusts better maybe.
I was considering seat but may still need old fella as no kids yet.

Mobz: I've had a Dakine XT seat harness for years and years. Gives me hip issues (different issue to you), but I like using it. It feels very direct with the rig. If I'm doing big walks out, I sling it over shoulder and put it on when I'm about to launch. I found walking it in causes the issue too. I've had a Mystic seat harness from Surfsail for a few years. It's much more comfortable, but the hook ends up being higher, and the harness does not have a direct feeling like the Dakine XT.

FYI: The local wave sailors call seat harnesses nappies. Some of them give me sht about it too.

W T F

You are scaring me

With waist harnesses if I get it adjusted poorly I irritate my rib cartilage but nothing other than that. Had a bad case of torn rib cartilage once, probably from being dumb with a weightbelt but similar injury, and couldn't sleep on that side for a couple months at least.

I cant use waist-harnesses... I have broken my ribs too many times (both sides), any pressure on the side of my ribs will cause pain. ie, I haven't found a waist harness which didn't crush my ribs one way or another , either by riding-up or too tight. I have found that wave-sailing-only doesn't cause as severe pressure on my ribs.

So a seat-harness for me.

To answer your question - your bar is too wide for your hips. I have the same thing 10 yrs ago... always sore hips by the end of a session. I broke that bar -> the replacement was about 5cm narrower, making the straps now pull across my waist ( instead of the metal part digging in ).

Yeah I know. I would never make the connection either.

I bought a used XL Mystic harness for $20 bucks at the swapmeet it fits good. So I bought a new Mystic for $600 in XL took it sailing and my hips hurt , too small so I gave it to the wife. Shrinkflation I guess.

No harness injuries in over 30 years of Windsurfing. In the eighties I used a NP race seat harness for all my Windsurfing, both raceboard and waves. When I returned to the sport in the noughties I used Prolimit Rambler & Severne POD seat harness. They were good but not as comfortable as the old NP. Two years ago I acquired another NP race seat. It has made a huge difference. I like the lightweight minimalist design and low hook. I bought an Ion hard shell waist harness for wind foiling. It works well with the low loads associated with foiling. I can use the waist harness for Windsurfing but prefer the seat.

My problem with the seat harness, is walking in them, if I have to go a longish distance it does my hips and lower back in.
So if it's a long walk back, I now take the harness off and fix it to the boom.
But I've had crashes that tore the harnesses apart, without damaging me.

Yes that’s it. The ends of the bar jammin right into pelvis if too long like mine was.

I have clocked about 40 thousand kms in 17 years and never had any harness related issues. I use a unifiber race seat harness I got from Remi -thewindsurfingshed, and for foiling I use a waist harness.

I don't have the uretha problem 😉
As a small person I use a seat harness to hold the power easier without doing my back in.
I have osteoporosis in my ribcage. The only time I've had rib pain was when I was slogging around and the boom was too high.
It was pulling up rather than out.
I was worried I wouldn't be able to sail anymore.
Lowered the boom and problem solved.phew..

My seat harness has a quick release bar. If I have a long walk I undo that to loosen things and undo the leg straps until I'm out there. 😊
