I don't know how it is further north (Perth metro) but around Bunbury we have had some huge tides this last week. I live about 500 mtrs from the estuary and the way it's going I would have water front real estate if it wasn't for the elevation :-(

This afternoon I saw a dolphin playing where I normally walk my dog!

On the serious side there are a number of dodgy channel markers, unofficial ones, that have become completely submerged, lying in wait for the unsuspecting boatie. (windsurfers are quite safe - there's no bloody wind!!!)

The Australind estuary has sometimes been a bit touch and go as to whether there is enough water to launch, but the last couple of years I can't remember a time when there was wind but no water. And as for the last few weeks, if you cant water start, you'd have a problem!

Is it a local phenomenom or can you guys launch from the Applecross car park as well??

The Mandurah estuary has also had winter level tides lately, think it's all these low pressure systems.

Your observations are backed up by the recorded data:

Fremantle and Perth have recorded similar increases.

Now we just need someone to explain why this is so...

ah that would be because this is a Il-Nina year and due to the warmer water and airtemps there has been allot of low pressure systems off the coast like decrepit said.

so next year Il-Nina can piss off and bring the wind and swell back [}:)]

High tides at Applecross also.
Can't quite launch from the carpark but consistently high tides of a level similar to a winter storm surge.

Theory is under Low pressure bodies of water rise, under high pressure water bodies fall, High air pressure squashes water down, and the opposite effect occurs under low pressure. Sailed up north past gero and massive high tides up there, reefs that would normally be exposed were submerged (Wago) No beach at Horrocks Thirsty Point gone at Cervantes, these are big pressure systems
