Just interested to know the appx cost of carbon cloth used in a boom.

Col,
Don't know about the cost of carbon but did a very rudimentary calc on the square metreage of carbon used for say a 40mm dia 180-230 boom. Each layer used in the construction of the boom including tail piece, head and tail areas is around .85sq.m, so if say guessing there's 5 layers in total (i've included glass layers as carbon here) I reckon really roughly you could say 4.5sq.m* of carbon is used.

*totally wild estimate

You'd probably need 30lin.m (5 layers x 6m/layer) of braided carbon sleeve www.fibreglast.com/product/Braided_Carbon_Biaxial_Sleeve_02609_1/Braided_Sleeves

BTW - sail performed brilliantly on the RDM too.

A few years ago the prices to large manufacturers would be as follows, However keep in mind, most windsurfing products are made in Asia by some very big composite producers with significant purchasing power. So I would estimate that my pricing is alot higher than in reality.

Carbon tow $20 /Kg
Woven cloth (200gm Plain weave) $20 / M2
Standard epoxy resin $5 mixed Kg

Prepreg Unis 200gm 300mm wide $20 per L/M (40% resin content)

Tooling costs are significant and consumables need to be considered. Not to mention all of the R & D.

I think so Sean, but I thought most of those on this forum, who have used carbon fibre in their projects would have most likely purchased dry cloth.

It's a bit like the cost of making a teenager. Materials are the least of it.

I've actually made 2 wave carbon booms years ago and they used hardly any carbon, less than 1m. From memory cost was about $20 per arm, maybe less.

Would'nt ever do it again though, pain in the arse so I just bought new one's from a shop!
