Got there @ 1500 on Saturday & launched just inside entrance; looked pretty crappy from shore (usually does as is so far offshore) but 3 hour session was GREAT; easterly @ 20 knots (starboard tack waveriding), sailing the bar from Ozone upwind to Point Smythe and all the way back again; perfect cross / off, glassy faces (apart from over the channel (outflowing tide)) awesome sections to hit on the R handers upwind and the L handers near Ozone were sooooo fast, cross - (very) offshore (smooth) and a couple of hundred metres long. Not real big but heaps of fun (bigger sets head high; perfect for me). Unreal speed run @ the entrance for when tired @ the end of the session. Sunday's westerley then sothwesterly was just as good; jumping playground, nice waveriding (port) when westerly. Only 1 problem; no one else out (apart from heaps in the inlet)!!!

were there alot of windsurfers in the inlet?

I sort of grew up around that area and spent alot of time between the inverloch and phillip island areas (cape patterson etc) Even back in the 80's there weren't many sailors there, but always looked like such a top spot for windsurfing.

Plenty in the inlet, but not overcrowded; mainly off the angling club, pretty choppy there on an easterly (great speed run here on west - southwesterly). There are much better areas there to sail, esp on easterly; Launch off Venus Street for the slicks leeward of the exposed bars (there's now a bar here exposed at all tides) and the awesome boiling glass on the other side @ Point Smythe (tide dependent; also really good here on w-sw where can sail inside or on the surf towards Venus Bay). Even better launch just west of the Kiosk / creek and sail towards the entrance or in the Surf at the entrance.
Cape Paterson is great on a westerly, leeward of the bombie @ the surf beach; surf breaks inside (usually pretty small). I'd love to sail the lovely surf at the channel there on a westerly, and at the western point of the opening of the Safety Beach.
Phillip Island; Woolamai on nw. Cat Bay (Right Point) is the best down-the-line spot I've seen in Vic on a sw; water's just a bit scary black sharky out the back; don't wanna grovel out here too long!!! Kilcunda / Powlett looks promising on an e-se.
I'd love to sail all these spots a lot more; wish more sailed there.

Have you ever considered sailing straight out off flynns beach, ventnor area? I often see nice standing but unbreaking waves out in the middle. I'd imagine it would be pretty dicey if you broke some gear, but looks awesome from the land and I can't work out what is causing them to break in that spot as it doesn't look shallow or rocky? There seem to be so many great looking spots to sail on the west side of the island. Seems it is totally wasted as I have never seen anyone out there except for surfers near the points. I wish queensland had something like phillips island, instad of this sh!tty beach break stuff.

I think the ramps you mention may be on the edge of the channel way out? I've heard of groups sailing out there and right across to the Peninsula (would want to pick the day / have a boat / ski!?) Apparently Flynns Reef (R hander) can be great on a Northerly; would love to try it one day. You're right; so many wasted spots around there!!

I think the waves in the middle are on the reef on the port side of the channel. A lot shallower than it looks- I slammed the tinnie into reef a bit further north once in the mistaken belief that "geez, I'm in the middle of Westernport so it must be deep". Not!
CH, I was out off Ozone St at Inverloch for the first time ever on Monday with an outgoing tide and a really dodgy (holey) seabreeze. What a mess. Nice jumps but stuff all power through the mush- really confusing currrents. If there was someone else sailing there with some local knowledge I would have been happy, but spent most of the time trying to work out wtf was going on.

I notice there are a few of those "breaking waves in the middle of nowehere" around there, and once they stand up they seem to keep going for ages, imagine all the turns you'd get off one cluster of waves there?! I drove the boat over to the ones near Flinders, and it seems to just be a sandbar, but always wondered what those ones are out in the middle straight off the western side of the island.

by the way, if one sails off Ozone street, does that mean that one does not require sunscreen?

That water out there looks very scary to me Haircut! Always worry about what's chasing them seals; don't think I'll explore unless in a group with a boat & after a few drinks!
Mikey S; not sure why, but seabreezes hardly ever seem to fill in properly down that coast; have more luck at Torquay, & esp northern Port Phillip Bay. Seem to have to rely on E - SE (better here than anywhere) or W - SW fronts. On S - SW (seabreeze direction), best to sail inside the bar for great jump ramps, or right out across the channel (care with outflowing tide; also can get VERY messy near / in channel when current flowing against the wind)on the inside of the bar towards Pt Smythe; long long runs along smooth waves with graet backside ramps. Hope to see you there one day!

Wave sailing ay Inverloch - Such a pity its not more popular.
Had a great sail there on 25 Jan , in 20 knt side-shore easterly, from Ozone St.
Wind was a little bit patchy at times, but had the right gear for this palce - 6 M sail and 117L Starboard Aero. Great starboard-tack riding, lots of smooth faces and good ramps for top turns.

But lonely!
Easterly in the estuary can be pretty uninspiring - consistent strong wind, but short, awkward chop.

Anyone out there who also hankers to sail the waves rather than the estuary, or already a committed beach sailor??

i used to fish alot from the jettys around the island, especially at night. I was fishing with a fishing friend off cowes pier and he caught a big 7 gill shark. Thats the only toothy shark i've ever seen while living in victoria for 28 years. Everything else i caught were your typical gummy, elephant, or banjo shark.

cheers
