Hi Paddy,
I have used a couple of the X cross boards from Jp. They are really quick(not as fast as an outright slalom board but nearly) and quite easy to sail. You may be better off looking at a board that is not quite as fast , but easier to sail, like to JP Freestlye Wave or the last years F2 Stlye.
Hope this helps

I have the JP 82L from 2004.
It is awsome. I use it for freestyle and racing.
It is not 100% perfect for both. I would rather get the 91 freestyle and the new JP 94 slalom 2006, but its a board that I can throw in the car and know that I will be able to use.
I can carry a 7.8m down to a 4.2m.
Would i recommend one? Yes if you arent scared of speed. They are fast and acellerate quickly. They can be a little lively in choppy ocean conditions. but compared to slalom boards are very behaved.
There was a few of last years at WSP 2nd hand.
The other option would be the Freestyle Wave, another great board.

I have one also. I am not an advanced sailor, but I find it quite easy to sail. They are quick on the plane and fast. Like Chad said though, they are designed for speed so are quite lively in really choppy conditions. I also have the 84L Freestlye wave which is great to sail and much better in chop...I couldn't get it back off my boyfriend the first time that he tried it!!
