It's been a while since I went through my beginners board, then upgraded to the Bombora slalom board, but never really learnt the straps and harness.
I'm doing the course this week, but on the hired equipment. Mine looks completely out of date.

I have no idea what the good brands are these days, type of equipment, regular mast sizes, fin shapes and sizes. What is Cross-Over, FreeRides, Freestyle? It used to be beginners, slalom and wave.

I mean, the other day, a guy came with a short but wide board, and a huge sail. At least 10-12 m. Whatthe???

Can anyone suggest the best way to learn about the current equipment used around and get more familiar with the jargon?

G'day Obelix

Welcome to the forums... In the old days it was all about racing or waves, and now there's all the 'freestyle' stuff for doing tricks - spocks & whipper-snippers (is that right Simon? )

From what I heard 'bout the old days, they were setup for going fast in a straight line, and turned like pigs. Now the boards are much more comfortable on the water, and very forgiving in the corners, making it much more fun/easy to get planing, gybe and generally spend less time in the drink.

Probably be hard to buy a 'bad' board these days, compared to the old days when there a few dodgy numbers around. The new freestyle boards mean you can have a day of going fast, and yet still have fun in the waves when you want ... an all-rounder.

RustyT posted this link to some videos of various tricks ... http://www.continentseven.com/museum.html

Enjoy .. Laurie

Thanks for the beauty site Laurie. Very impressive videos.
Never seen the air jibe before.

I think I'll go into one of the shops these days, and spend some time chatting with a salesman.

Now, who can advise me how to explain to my wife that the three boards I have at home are all junk, and I need to buy a new one...

tell her it would be like using one of those old bicycle of the 1800s with the big wheel at the front...
wouldn't be very safe and wouldn't go very fast and very far.

but having said that now you don't need 3 boards....one would do...
what are your boards anyway you might find some people that would get them for
few bucks just to learn on, unless they're heavier than a menhir!!!

"I mean, the other day, a guy came with a short but wide board, and a huge sail. At
least 10-12 m. Whatthe???"
forget about that , this i's not windsurfing this is boat sailing!!!...

Find one of these new boards that are a bit wide yes, but a sail around 5m2 to 5.5m2 will do for the typical seabreeze.
You will always find some people full on about fins size...and all that crap , like it use to be for slalomers in the old days but apart if you want to go pro you don't need all that. The idea now is a good all around board and a good sail ( as they've got a huge wind range now)...anyway any shops will be of good advice.

Welcome back on the water and enjoy!!!

Thanks for very useful advice Leski.

re: large boards
I was told it was the latest competition board for the weaker winds. Looked new. Ugly though.

re: Old boards
I have a Klepper funboard. Retractable dagger, straps. Fibreglass mast, boom (not a clip on) and a 5m sail with one batten. The board could use a bit of silicone along the side, otherwise one could still start learning on it.

Free to good home. First come...
I may not be able to wrestle the sail from my wife. She is covering a sandpit with it.

Thanks again

HI Rory, Greenroom,

>>>shoes
Thanks for the advice.
The shoes idea wouldn't work. I got more shoes then she has.

Otherwise, I tried teaching her once, but a few dolphins came around, she thought it was sharks...
I had to swim all the way to paddle her back. Never again.

Anyway, you should know that the garden and the house expenses are much more important than the expenses for fun stuff. Or, that's what you'll find out when you get married.

Hi Greenroom,

It was only a joke. I've been happily married for 23 years and still love my wife. After all , she's let me buy three boards so far.

If I had a million, I wouldn't look splash it on sex. I would go and buy a brand new windsurfer!!!

However, back to the reality and the used equipment.
I have a carbon mast which is slowly disintegrating.
(The fibre is surfacing). Is there any way to take care of this, or should I get rid of it

Hi there Obelix,

Did you end up sending that gear to a good home? If not I would be very interested.

My number in 0402 780 855. Happy to chuck in a carton for it.
