I'm going to be going up to Kalbarri WA in the first week of October, and was wondering what the windsurfing is like up there at that time of year, what sort (flat or waves) and what wind to expect? Thanks for any advice

I was at Kalbarri for a week last January. I don't know whether the wind will be any good, but my best bit of advice would be go to Coronation if you get the chance. In January it was blowing strong southerly most days. Sailing in the river mouth was crap- short flatwater runs but the wind was holey as anything as it was blowing offshore from over a hill to the south. I did have a good bump and jump blast launching from a beach a few kms south of Kalbarri near Red Bluff although had to time the launch between dumping waves on the steep beach. There was a reef break just outside the river entrance that I had my eye on, but I think it might end up being you last sail ever if you attempted it. You'd need army boots to get over the oyster encrusted rock shelf first, or sailing out from a wind shadow would be dodgy. The river would be good for speed if it ever blows westerly.
But otherwise- Coronation if you have a bit of time to get there. The Port Gregory road is great to make up some time. What was the speed limit again in WA? Have fun.

the day i was there i sailed on the river because the swell was BIG and very technical. one mistake and you/your gear is toast..... very light on the inside

but better to take a canoe and go for an explore up the river, crap for windsurfing, river is too small (unless u r learining).

here's some pics

BTW, I passed through Kalbarri just after Christmas also. Spent a good while looking at that break in front of the river... I thought sailing down to it might be best (say from red bluff, if you can find someone kind enough to bring your car back) - rather than attempting to sail down the river... Tricky... Surely someone has sailed it

I could see myself getting worked in that on the way out. I think it would have gone something like this:

Long walk = 2
Broken mast = 1
Waves = 0

Far Canal, Windy. It never looked anything like that when I was there. Looks like it had a lot of west in it when you took the photos.

Mikey, you must have had a rare moment, because it looks like that more often than not.

Unfortunately, the whole "coast angle" v "wind angle" just rules Kalbarri out for windsurfing altogether.

Jakes is a fantastic surf break if you are into that

re: the photos. There has been more dollars worth of equipment and boats lost going out and coming in through that river mouth than you or I will earn in a lifetime

Hi Guys,

Kalbarri is where I first started windsurfing. I havn't been up in October for ages usually I go just after christmas (well when I had uni breaks I used to .... full time work now )

Anyway, if the sea breezes are coming in best to get out about 1030am - 11am on the river near the boat hire. Generally the breeze swings a bit later in the avo making the conditions more marginal, however the last 2 years I've been told that the winds have been howling in for longer.

I would recommend against sailing through the mouth. If you happen to run into trouble you'll likely wash up at a place called "Frustration" ... you wouldn't come out too good.

Having said that I've seen people go through there no problems ... only issue is when you have a problem.

Looked more like this when I was there. The entrance actually looked easily navigable then.

Good to get the feedback from those who have been there. Have driven past the turn-off plenty of times but never ventured in for the look. Was on the "high" list of places to live next given the great climate, however after all this information I have definitely revised my list.
