Anybody out there got knee trouble? Have you found windsurfing helps or aggravates the problem? What kind of windsurfing has had what effects - bump n jump as opposed to formula etc...

Me, had some trouble in high school, now I can't run 10 steps or it hurts for days, but I can hike up and down mountains no probs. I've just had three 5m days in a row and two good 7m days before that, and that adds up to a lot of chop hops! Been sailing at least 3 hours each day. Every part of me is feeling the pain now, so it would be only natural for the ol' knees to complain a bit, but I can't help feeling that windsurfing has been good for them overall...

I can't run for crap after my teeneage years doing to much high impact training.
My knees can handle windsurfing, in my opinion, because it keeps me fit keeping the pounds off and our bump and jump conditions are relativley low impact compared to running.
However I recently tried wake boarding and as you are being pulled side on my knees copped a hammering.

Yep, agreed! I've got 'footballer's knees', but the w/surfing doesn't seem to bother them (apart from general stiffness/muscle soreness after a good sesh)

I also found that, after damaging my shoulder in my last game, and putting up with it for a couple of years, after a year w/surfing, it's come good!

Maybe w/surfing is a remedy in it's self?!?

Yeah my left knees kinda stuffed already (getting better i think, havn't had trouble for a while). I hurt it the first time doing gymnastics in school PE. Decided to do a back flip from like 1.5m and landed knee first on the floor boards. Thought it was ok after sitting out for like 5 mins so kept going for the day. About 7 hours later i thought **** this hurts and then iced it but the damage was done. Waited 4 days then went to see a physio and yeah eventually it slowly got better. Was on crutches for a few weeks though with a brace. That was so crap.

These are from the 4 days before i went to the physio.

Since i've injured it a few for times playing backyard cricket, playing base ball at school, coming off the motorbike prity hard and windsurfing. Got pictures from every time but i think you can see how it goes most often from the others. The only difference if when i came off the motorbike there were grazes and cuts everywhere, aswell as all over the rest of my body.

Hopefully i'll have no more trouble.

Bubs.....

Look after your bod better, man!!!

I had a few tumbles and bumps through footy[}:)], and now at 34yo, I'm feelin' it, although I know guys worse!

If you want to be enjoying the water in 20, or so more years....take better care of those knees!

Growing up inland, I was footy-mad, now I'm starting to wish I hadn't played (for so long, at least), especially after seeing 40-50-60yo surfers, and ex-surfers that are physically better-off than most of my 30-40yo ex-footy mates.

Have had knee probs for 26 years, the thing that has saved me in last 3 or 4 years is Glucosamine/MSM/Chondroitin = windsurfing the best I ever have in my life (Coz I didn't have to give up, and therefore been able to get to the next level)

Predominantly it is a natural anti-inflammatory and joint lubricant, and there is also some evidence that it can grow cartlidge back, as has been found post-operative, but it does depend on the amount of damage that already exists?

I had major sore Knees, even when just walking. I guess from Windurfing for 28 years, Snow skiing for 30years, snow boarding, motocross racing for many years. I thought i may have to give it all away, because of so much pain! So i went to see a knee Doctor he recommended Good quality fish oil, and Joint support tablets, And also to get back into Push bike riding,Because It is low impact,so much better than Walking. The Bike is great fun addictive, and great when NO wind! It takes a while for it to work but my knees are the best they have been for decades!! and no more pain.and generally i feel fitter and healthier that i ever have.
