Now that I've taken up my winter residence, I'm once again becoming aware of the weight difference in rigs. I have heavy equipment here. The Chinook Comp boom and a 30% carbon mast. If I purchase new and more expensive replacements, the rig will be lightened by a pound or two. Up to now this hasn't been a noticeable difference for me once I am sailing. However, since I've been having trouble with shoulder tendonitis, I'm wondering if a lighter rig might be less stressful. However, I do think that the power of the wind still creates the biggest force creating the stress. What do you think?

There's certainly advantages in light gear, but unless you're uphauling, I think the shoulder stress is more affected by rig efficiency and stability.
If the centre of effort is constantly shifting around in gusts, that's a real strain on the whole arm.
Some sails are more stable than others.

Tuning can also affect how "heavy" a sail feels, not enough downhaul, is usually the problem.

Woops, had a gut feeling about you Ruby, but maybe you're starting to reform since your Brucie days, after all you've made 27 posts without getting barred so far, be interesting to see how long you can make it, as this persona.

Amazing that somebody can windsurf for 20 years and still have questions about a lighter mast or boom.

I am currently using a selection of 09/10 severne sails...gotta be the lightest sails ever....combined with a good mast etc this set up weighs bugger all...this HAS to be reflected in the way you sail and has to be easier on the body(compared with old style rigs that weigh a ton and are pretty hard going when submerged and trying to water start etc..)...demo some new gear and see the difference...

I've got shoulder tendonitis .I find the disadvantages of heavy gear is in the waterstarting in light winds etc but I must admit I avoid anything over a 5.6m sail as I find that my body finds it heavy work & it can stir things up.I rely on the harness a lot so the only time my arms get a workout is gybing ,jumping , waterstarting..Ive got some great streches that my chiro gave me & they are a god send. I do them every 2 hrs even during the night if necessary after a sail.If your tendonitis is like mine as soon as you get tight between the shoulder blade its downhill so get some streches to strech up the back & theyll help. Can't really describe mine here as they are a bit complex.. bit of a contortion but boy they do the job!
I just read the other posts..Oh well if I got sucked in to answering bad luck..

think about it .. thiers no reason in the word y a hevy rig would be betta than i light one ... .. ligher rig would feel more responsive lighter in your hand ... just evevy part of that rig would be better the lighter it is ... i often get lower back pain if i dont have my seat harness up high and loose .. if i tighten the leg straps and hold the spreader bar below my belly button i often mind my self in trouble ... visit a chiropractor 2

Mark, you are still getting red thumbed for ANY comment.

Are you sure there's not some guy out there that holds a bit of a torch for you? I thought it was because they hated you, but now it seems they just want some attention... not that there's anything wrong with that.

Amazing, something to actually think about regarding the topic.

You might have gotten sucked into taking the other posts seriously, but I can't post anything regaring your answering bad luck unless you think tendonitis is a result of bad luck. You have to ignore the few rather nasty guys (English and American) that stalk the internet windsurf forums offering little and demanding a lot. After twenty years of windsurfing and reaching my 60th year of life, I have found that the tendonitis is the reward. However, I think that cold weather (55 F. water or less, air temps down to freezing or lower) makes it much worse. Like the Bhudda I gave up Yoga stretching twenty years ago. Perhaps I will make it a routine again. As to heavy rigs, I didn't notice the differences in the past once on the water. Since I rarely use a sail smaller than a 6.0, I can't take the smaller sail route.

Not so amazing that a forum regular doesn't offer anything regarding the topic or ideas presented and takes a rather lowly personally offensive approach.

Wrong. A heavier rig most likely has more durable components. The lower the carbon content of a mast, the less likely it will break. In fact, the mast to which I am referring was advertised as >>bomb proof<< and the most popular Columbia Gorge mast when sold. The boom also came with a solid guarantee that it would not break. After 15 years which included some very stressful use, it has not. Both components were purchased after breakage of lighter equipment.

I own new gear, but don't keep much of it in Florida. As I have posted previously, my most used sail in the past year was a 9.6. I do think that cambered sails will be more stable and easier on the shoulders.

Hi Pete, I expect you are addressing me. I will try and not take your references to my weight problem personally

You might have something there though. Mark, maybe Cosmic charlie has been following you since rec.windsurfing??

I sort of doubt it though, 'Cosmic' seems to thrive on asking questions that he already has an answer sitting there ready for.

Given the amount of sailing I have had lately, I might have to take over Cosmic Charlie's MO for this side of the world. Do you think 'Cosmic Dale' has a good ring to it?

Cosmic, do you grant franchises? Do you mind if I ask these questions in kgs, degrees celcius, kms, and knots though? This Fahrenheit thing has got me stumped!
