I have a pryde 30 % Carbon Matrix 2000 4.9 metre mast, there appears to be a crack forming midway in the top section aligned with the wound fibres Is it possible to repair or reinforce this before it breaks, or am I better off just ditching and buying another I use the mast in winds up to 25 knts, cheers

It is possible to get this fixed, but whether you can find someone with the skills to do it will be the big question. Any repair will also alter the bend characteristics of the mast, and up the top there is where you'll notice it the most.

Also, think about what happens if/when it breaks.. it's not just your mast that will be damaged - the broken bits will tear the mast sleeve on your sail, and you'll probably be stuck offshore in the most inconvenient place. Hopefully you can avoid stabbing yourself on the carbon splinters, and hopefully you can get the top section of broken mast out of the sail without tearing it even worse..

You can either be cheap, or safe.. but usually not both at the same time!

Yep, flick it, but cut it up first so some other poor b*stard doesn't get caught

Seems to be quite a common problem with NP masts (and no this isn't an anti NP post), i'm sure i read elsewhere that lots of people saw small cracks in the mast running with the fibres..

Maybe it's just something that happens to NP masts and you don't need to worry?

I honestly don't know the answer but thought i'd throw the thought out there...

I've got two pieces of a 30%carbon matrix 2000 460 from a friend - it snapped just below the ferrule (flash word for the bit where the top section slides over the bottom section) while he was downhauling it in the carpark. NP replaced it for him, and the replacement went bang in much the same way, only on the water while being sailed (not crashed, or jumped or anything!).

That said, I have two NP 30% 430's and haven't seen any problems yet. I believe that NP had a bad run on masts for a while - hopefully they got that sorted quickly seeing as NP sails only set properly on NP masts!

On the other hand, I have a Tushingham 430 that is covered in microscopic carbon splinters.. Ouch! Apparently that's due to over use, and a combination of water penetration and UV deterioration of the outer resin..

maybe it's also the way the mast is finished? Tushingham masts are similar to np (as in they're completely smooth) whereas my loft and gun masts are "bumpier" (as in you can still see the strands). Maybe it's because the tushy/NP masts i've had have been 30% yet gun/loft are 100% and therefore have less resin?

To be fair to NP if they have a problem with their kit they fix it - like the leg cutting bottom to their wave sails and the masts for the 12.5m formula sails which snapped quite often...

rap in epoxy and glass for a cheap fix, but only let beginners sail it and buy yourself a new one, when it does snap it will rip your mast sleeve, and hopefully it won't be when your doing your out side gybe on a mast high day..
