Hi all,

I have just got hold of several small sails, and I am now in the market for some 400/430 masts. The 4.2, 4.7 amd 5.3 sails recommend 19, 19 and 21 IMCS respectively. I have had an offer of a vgc. Powerex 430x30%xIMCS25 for $100. I am not sure whether or not to buy this mast because of its 25 IMCS rating. What are people's thoughts on the importance of the IMCS rating? Cheers

If it was me, I'd avoid the 25 - way too stiff .. it is for the shorter slalom/freeride sails.. the difference is very noticeable.

Enjoy .. Laurie

a 430 with an IMCS of 25 is not neccesserally a stiff mast. if its MCS was 25 then it would suit a race sail (older style) but it is unusual to find a curent 430 with an MCS of over 21.
IMCS is Indexed to a 460 so if a 430 with an IMCS of 25 was extended to 460 its stiffness would be 25. but if its MCS was say 21 (usual) and Imcs 25 then it would be 21 as a 430 and 25 as a 460.
Clear as mud?

Thanks Ian, you set me on the right track.
But after a bit of hunting around here is some clarification..

IMCS = (MCS x (Length)^2) / (460)^2

ie a 'normal' 430 mast would have an MCS or 25, and an IMCS of 21

I will get the 430 mast hopefully, but I am still after a 400. So if anyone has one they'd like to sell, give me a ring....
