Hi All,

It has been a while but I am just starting to get back windsurfing (body permitting). I made a few trips to Maui in the late 80s / early 90s and am keen to go again. I plan to go for about 3 weeks, mid July.

Just wondering if anyone else is planning a simular trip? Last time I went a group of us basically rented cars from “Rent a wreck”, stayed in a condo at kihei and sailed all day.

If you are keen or went recently and can advise on the best and worst of Maui 15 years later please email me or add to this thread.

Also, anyone who went recently, if you don’t mind giving a cost breakdown I’d appreciate it (e.g., flights, excess luggage, car hire, accommodation).

I’ve started this thread early as: 1) I’m keen, 2) People may need to book holidays, 3) It may be best to book early.

Regards.

Hi Flipper, we are pencilling in a trip in June this year, we went last year for two weeks in June, had an absolute ball, if you like I can hook u up with the NZ crew that go most years, hire a house in Paia behind Jaques and the house comes with two trucks for windsurfing gear.

Our cost break downs were as follows - note we were travelling with a 4 year old

Airfares for three of us were all on frequent flyers, but would have cost around $5000 for Adelaide - Sydney - Honolulu - Maui (and back again)

Car hire was $1000 for two weeks
Windsurfing Gear was $900 for two full rigs (three sails in each set)
Accomodation (maina aina - past Pawela - hanging with the Goyas) $1200
Food - for two weeks including beer and pub meals $1000

Miscellaneous $1000

We sailed at Kanaha everyday taking it in turns looking after the little one - best holiday ever!

Hey Flipper. I was the same as you. I went back this year for the first time in 15 years. Went with a bunch of mates, some of whom have been going every year for ages. Definitely helped in basically every dept.
We stayed at Maui Sunset in Kihei which is unreal.
Sailed at Kanaha, once at Sugar Cove and once at Kihei.
Blew its t**s off for the first 2 weeks and then was lighter for the last week.
We got station wagons from Al West which were practical but ours was a heap of s**t. had to duct tape the bonnet down, put an extra tie down around the boards and thru the windows to keep the roof on.
Cheap though.
We hired gear from Hawaiian Island. we got board, boom, ext, 2 masts and 3 sails for $600 US for 3 weeks back in July. It was a great deal. The Ezzy sails were tops.
Didnt spend that much on food but heaps on beer.
The place hasnt changed that much, lots of tourists still but going from Kihei to the North Shore each days its mainly local traffic.
We all booed flights thru different outlets, I got mine from Zuji for about $1100 with Hawaiian Airlines.
Start getting your info together now as we booked everything early which was heaps better than a mad rush. I nearly left renewing my passport but made it.
Hope this helps.

Hi guys,

Thanks for the info. Divaldo, I may take you up on the offer of joining the NZ guys. What are their timeframes? Was thinking 3 weeks because every year I've been there is always that 1 week of light stuff (15-20kn).

Am I right that both of you didn't take your own gear? Any reason why (is the luggage cost too high now)? Was free when I travelled but they stung me $100US on my last return flight.

Thanks again.

I will chase up NZers

We hired gear as we were back packing with a four year old, so taking our own gear was not an option

but Jetstar don't take no windsurf gear... that's right. talk to my buddy Stefan the German... he has plenty of good things to say about Jetstar... Naaaaaaat. Apparently Jetstar takes no luggage over 2 meters in length. Something to do with the fact that they pack everything into containers. Maybe it's different on different routes but as I said I have only heard bad things... so be warned.

Ofcourse if you are thinking of renting gear from those good people at Neil Pryde Maui it's a different matter...

Flipper, some of my mates thought about it but in the end its super easy to hire over there.
We booked and reserved our gear through Hawaiian Island in Kahalui.
Pay your money through secure site and when we rocked up on our arrival day it was all sitting ready to throw in hire car.
Plus you swap anytime you want at no charge. The first 2 weeks I used a 5.0 in the morning and 4.5 after lunch. Others used 4.7 then down to 4.2 or 4.0, it was bloody windy!!
We all used JP boards which were great. The last couple of days were lighter so you just go in and swap a board or sail for something bigger.
I actually bought a board and 2 sails whilst over there with out thinking about excess luggage charges. Got to the airport and kept the gear out of sight during check-in then when the agent asked us to load our stuff I just played dumb. She wasnt impressed but didnt charge me, phew!! Have heard some horror stories though so in my humble opinion its just easier to rent.

I stayed with the Goyas at Maina Aina as I found it the cheapest self contained accommodation available on the web that was about 10 mins north of Hookipa. I found it better to stay on the north side as the commute form Kihie is about 25mins.
I carefully checked all the rental shops as well and found that the rental prices are pretty much all the same - it just depended on what brands you wanted. Hawaiin Island is very good.
Try to break up your sailing during the day and do power hours 11:00am -1pm, 3-4pm and take a break for lunch. Your body will appreciate it!
Hiking in the West Maui mts is very cool and worth the trip for easy but beautiful forest/waterfall walks. Just find the trailhead on the side of the road - don't pay $US60 just to be escorted by a tour company. Mountain biking is also an option!
If you want less crowded sailing away from the intensity of hookipa but still with waves/flat water ...you just need to ask the right person - I don't want to advertise here
I do have notes from my trip in 2004
have a good trip!
cheers

Well my mate & I are planning a mid year trip to somewhere warm & windy & were thinking of Dahab, but Maui is sounding like a better option. The only thing is cost, it does sound a bit expensive. What's the nightlife like and more importantly how are the wahinas??

Have been searching around for cost breakdowns.

At this stage I'm thinking of staying on the south side (Kihei), BUT am open to ideas. Tracked down the place I use to stay at (windsurfari.com/accom/prop_village_by_the_sea134.html) - Trust me it's fantastic. We did a bit of sailing just out the front (Good little break in southerly swell). JP use to stay in the unit next door and sailed the same spot – if only I’d learnt something! For the speed heads there is an area about a km up the road (Or use to be). Travelled to the North Side (Sprecks, Kanaha, Camp One and Hookipa) most of the time though. Cost of the above per unit per night is (AUS dollars based on 75c/1USD):

270 / 2 people = 135.00
270 / 3 = 90.00
270 / 4 = 67.50
270 / 5 = 54.00

Unit capacity is 5 (we did get 8 in there at one stage. Had to hide 3 when the agent caught wind).

Car hire to come (Any recommendations). Looking for a Ford Laser style wreck.

Might actually get there one of these days!!

Can someone direct me to these Jetstar $400 return flights?? I went onto their site and can only find $400 EACH way. Am I missing something??

For that price who cares they don't take gear... might as well hire! can't really see myself out at Kanaha on my 2001 Zones... beach cred: zero...

Matt,

Best price i've seen is about $1000 return from Hawaiian. Have sent a request to Flight Center to get me details of the flight and Hawaiian's policy on excess luggage. Will post the reply when I know more.
