I'm going to spend the entire winter windsurfing in Southeast Asia and my first choice was Boracay, but yesterday I searched discussion boards and found multiple instances of people complaining about it being heavily overcrowded... Then I typed in "cheap windsurfing spots" and Mui Ne in Vietnam popped up which so far seems like a better option which also has waves (:D). But on the other hand, kit rental prices are steep, more so then on Boracay...

So I haven't really made up my mind yet, I might end up visiting both, but I have a few questions left, they are...

* In Boracay, how bad is the crowd really? I read that many of the kiters are zigzagging close to shore (because of the onshore winds) making it difficult for you to get out. But once you get out, don't you have all the space you need a bit further upwind in the bay?

* In Mui Ne, can I sail at the wave spots with rental equipment? If so, how do I get my kit there? There are no rental places at the wave spots right?

* About kitesurfing, is there a suitable area in Mui Ne to learn as a complete beginner?

* About internet - I need a connection to maintain my online business. I know I can get an wireless internet dongle at Boracay and that the speed sucks... But what about Mui Ne? What are the options there, and how is the speed?

They are the specific questions that I have, but any other thoughts experiences are definately welcome too. Would love to hear about them...

Im Going to Boracay in Feb and cant wait.

I went to Mui Ne this year. Mui Ne is a large bay - so open water with some killer shore dump. Was cross onshore. I went in their off windy season so it wasnt the best time of year - it was only 12 knots if that. I didnt sail only kited as it was lame wind. I wouldnt say it was a goodmlearning spot as you punch straight out offshore.

To be honest I didnt rate Mui Ne and would rather sail at home. We are spoilt. Accom was good and internet via hotel wifi was good.

I wouldnt return to Mui Ne in a hurry though. Pretty overated.

Boracay looks the go. It appears to be a big lagoon so should be plenty of room and most of the kiters will want to stick close to shore where people watch them lol.

ANOTHER POINT - If you're talking about going in our winter you may get skunked as its the off season over there. From all reports Boracay windy season is Nov to March. Vietnam was not windy when I went late May.

had a great time at mui ne in november

shore break was great fun to sail on low tide

i did a contra deal - promo vid in exchange for free gear hire for the week- so no travelling with gear hassles.

www.windsurf-vietnam.com/video-gallery/
(scroll down to the full moon beach video on the right hand side)

Evo 92 and gator 6.0 was a great combo - hint -the hire evo worked best with the mast track right at the back- planed up nice and early.

Also had a great session on an older carve 101 and NCX 7.5.
And did some kiting as well - enough to make me realise that i dont miss it (it was a 14 on a twin tip - so super draggy set up)

Wind was sideshore and shorey was super fun waist to head high - great for reos and mini airs. right out the front of the hotel restaurant. (Full moon beach)

WEnt to another bay and sailed cross on logo high.

It was a great opportunity to get on the water for a few days during a month in one of the coolest countries i have visited.

loved the people , food, climate, culture, value for money.

Recommend Hanoi, Halong bay, Mount Fancipan summit,Hoi Anh, Phu Quoc island

I've been to Boracay but not been to Mu Ne. So here's what I know. hope it helps:

Boracay - getting there takes a flight from Sydney to Manila, then another flight to the island next to Boracay, then a boat to Boracay. If you stay at Reef Retreat at Bulabog beach you can arrange for somebody to meet you at the landing on Boracay. it's mid-priced but once you get into the swing of things you can find a place that is cheaper for longer. Reef Retreat is a great place to stay though.

Nov - April trade winds blow onto Bulabog beach from the east so it is the place to w'surf or k'surf. I learnt to k'surf there. You'll need boots to avoid the sea urchins! The wind is up in the mornings but dies in the afternoon. So if you enjoy boozing nightly you'll miss the best of the breeze.

Apr - Oct trade winds reverse and blow onto White Sands beach from the west. there is a lot of accomodation here and is also the nightly party strip (watch out for the ladies. They are NOT real!!).

My own experience was great on Bulabog. Nice place to chill away from the party scene on the other side of the island (a 10min walk). I kitesurfed most days. My friends windsurfed. The kites tend to steer clear of windsurfers. Who wants to get their lines wrapped around a mast afterall? And the majority of both sporting types are respectful of each other.

If you want to learn to K'surf in tropical clear waist deep water then bulabog is definitely the place.

My friends Rabs and Orson windsurfed there and got blind every night at White Sands beach. Their experience wasn't so positive as a result as they missed the morning breezes. I have to say I think 2008 was not a great year for breeze. Drop Matt a line at Reef Retreat and ask him what the wind is or has been like in 2010/11.

As for Mu Ne I know it is good for both too. But you could be better off learning to kite elsewhere as there are dumping waves on shore. For windsurfing it is good for sure. Have that advice told to me from Rabs (also a forum member)

The vietnamese are a nice bunch of people too and if you are on the mainland and you get bored at least you can go some where else. On Boracay (7km by 1 km) there isn't much else to do.

Best of luck either way. send us a post card!

nicely put Purcho .. be on a light head in the mornings as the hard core guys kite real early in the morning like 5am..last 2010-11 was I think the windiest I have seen it for a week straight consistently. Biggest sail I used was a 5.4 and 6.2 and an old c-kite at 8mtrs. but that was on a January. The trade winds are here now and pretty early for this year hope all is well for the rest of the season.

I'm from Europe, forgot to mention that... I asked here cause the spots are so close to Aus. so I figured more people here would be familiar with the spots. Seems like I was right.

Cool, had a look at those vids there and looks like some pretty fun waves there.

@Puncho, thanks for the info, will look out for the lady boys! :)

P.S. I asked the same question at the mpora.com windsurfing forums and thought it would be a good idea to interlink the two posts - so that everyone else interested can easily find both discussions and the info within. There are some good tips there as well. Here is the post at mpora.com: boards.mpora.com/forums/4-questions-mui-t60021.html?p=868048#post868048

Go to Boracay. The diving is brilliant and the beaches are pretty special (even if over crowded).

If you are there for a while and get to know the locals, I'm sure they will take you down to the waves spots around the islands off the south end of Boracay.

NFI,

These wave spots you speak of. How accessible are they?

Would lug own kites to use if some decent spots for waves and then just hire sail gear for the lagoon.

Cheers

Mui Ne gets good sideshore wind thru the (Northern) winter, you can sail every day in anything from 15 to 35 knots. Mid-year it's much lighter.

If you're going for the whole season, it's much cheaper to bring your own gear! 1 board and 2 sails will cover it, and you can always rent something different from time to time if you think you really need it.

Thanks Purcho for the alcoholic reference! Sure did get blind most nights as got a bit carried away with the nightlife on white beach and was typically hungover when the wind blew!!. Just be aware of the lady boys and dont get caught out - not that I did!! The windsurfing is superb on Bulabog beach (which is the dedicated windsurf and kite beach) and although there is no zoning in the bay with the kites its easy to get to the next bay where you pretty much have it to yourself. The year we went was 2008 - Jan / Feb and El Nina was present which was bad for wind in Asia in both Mui Ne and Boracay but normally the place is consistant. Reef retreat is the place to stay as Purcho mentioned run by a british windsurfer and his wife from Eastbourne and made us very welcome:
www.reefretreatboracay.com/
There is however not a decent wave so if that is what you're after then maybe not the place but definitely has a nice vibe to it and good flatwater/slalom/freestyle and jumpn bump. The second bay is the place to be for this so dont be put off by the crowding of the kites in the first bay - just punch through and head over to it.
The other great thing about Boracay was the other things to do like snorkelling off boats and all the attractions on white beach so if the winds not blowing theres plenty to do.
Why not do both if you can - I think a long period of time in Boracay you would soon get bored sailing the 2nd bay even though its good, although if you were learning to kite as well that would keep you occupied. The waist deep water in the first bay seemed ideal for learning kiting.
Mui Ne probably has more space although has a bone crusher shore break which isnt great for windsurfing....A difficult decision but friends I was with spent 2 months in Mui Ne and said it was cheaper so if you are there for a long time could well be more cost friendly. Pros and Cons of both I would say.

Hope that helps,
Rabs
