HEY HEY FOLKS,

My name is Erin and I am a noob! I would love to learn more about windsurfing... I live in Tassie - can anyone hook me up? I need to know what board to buy...where I can learn... what sort of other gear so I need etc.... basically anything you old salty dogs know, I wanna know too.

Like I said I have been a competitive sailer all my life right from sabots, sabres, lasers, thru to single handed and double handed yacht races on board 24 ft Robb Legg trailer sailer.... I love the water, have dabbled in kayaking but found the clubs to be too policical for my liking, I just wanna be out on the water and have fun.

Welcome Erin, you've made a wise choice. I too started in a sabot, then went to a laser, dabbled on big boats, but windsurfing all the time. Once you get the hang of it, all other sailing craft are boring. What part of Tassie are you in?

Tassie eh.

May I recommend a really buoyant board to cope with weight of the wetsuit you will need.

I was down there a few years back and couldn't resist a dip in the beautiful clear water at Cosy Corner (NE coast somewhere). Anyway, it was so cold that it felt like something was biting at my skin.

Once I managed to get some circulation back so I could breathe and use my arms and legs again I swam to shore never to make that mistake again.

Seriously though there is a lot of great starter gear around now and it will help get you up and running in no time. Start with a relatively wide and buoyant board so you have a nice stable platform to learn on and get yourself a nice strong but fairly small, non- cambered sail. Strong because you may be using it as a trampoline for the first few outings, non-cambered because they are easier to use at first.

Some of the newer start boards are also quite quick and you may be able to find one that allows you to use it right up to intermediate level by simply changing your fins and sails.

It can be a little frustrating starting out but stick with it as the rewards just keep getting better and better as time goes on and with your love of the water you are sure to enjoy it.

Hi again, just checked your profile and saw you're in Launnie. I'm not sure about the scene up there (I'm in Hobart), but check out the photo of Rosevears. Might be worth sending a mail to Jimmy for the local lowdown. Also do a google search, I'm sure there's a page somewhere listing northern sailing sites.

The most people I have seen at Rosevears sailing on one day was four, but only three on the water at the same time

Used to be only one fella there regularly when I was around, about five years ago... Perhaps Jimmy

There are a few other people at Low Head... Be back in Tassie on Friday Not sailing though

BTW, don't crash into the nice new pulp mill on your (future) board

LOL @ Pulp Mill comment - I work for the only newspaper up here in the North of the state - the Examiner... if I hear any more about that stupid bloody pulp mill I will go insane.. we actually had a member of the public come in kicking and screaming demanding wanting to know where the Prime Minister was cos he was against it! LOL.

(Apparently John Howard is here somewhere)..

anyway I cant wait to try this windsurfing out.. are there any clubs or anything i can go to here in Tas does anyone know>

Ha ha ha... That is funny... The Examiner a newspaper... Nice one BTW, I can joke as Launceston is my home town... and that newspaper is only matched by Tassies other papers, The Advocate and The Mercury... Then again, The West Australian, while a lot thicker, has not got much more content... OK, getting a little off topic...

Anthony Perkins in Port Sorrell might be able to point you in the right direction (if he is still around). There was nother guy in Hobart, think is name is Barrenger...

Yeah, just had another look at the photo, it seems strange that at least 6 of the 7 sailers have Ezzys, and 5 are wearing identical things. The sailor having a stack may have the same gear as well. Where's Jimmy, "Please Explain".
I'm not sure about Northern clubs, but I think down here the Sandy Bay Sailing Club might do intro to windsurfing courses over summer.

Hello,

Photoshop is a wonderful thing.

Hi Erin, yeah thats me in the photo (exept 1) There are a few of us that sail a rosevears as regularly as we can. 2 of us sail there predoninantly. Most people learning here go to trevallyn dam. There are some reasonable wave sailing on the north coast. I would need to know some size facts before giving you an idea of what to go for board wise.
I would be more than happy to catch up and give u some info.

And yes Ezzy is very common with the people i sail with.

Cheers

Jimmy

LOL @ everyone...

Hey Jimmy... where you hail from?

I am 158 cms and weigh 60kilos... its ALL muscle baby...

I would LOVE to try it out first to see if I am any good... I used to water ski and sail so I think windsurfin surfin will b awesome... I am after an adrenlin sport where I wont get too injured....

although after some of the pics I have seen of some accidents maybe its not as soft as i thought...

and yeah - i think anyone who bags out tassie are the people who have not been here.....

i have sailed most places in aus and believe that bass strait is the toughest as is the west coast of tas.... damned scary man.

have sailed in qld.. was a member of the hervey bay royal yacht club... pretty tame up there - dad and i actually went sailing in cyclones to make it feel more like tassie weather... only little cyclones tho.

so what other gear do i need - where can i buy a board from here .... tamar marine?

I must have been hanging out in the wrong places.

I went to the cinema, the power went off after 20 minutes in...was a **** movie anyway, then I went to a restaurant, up the hill heading east, had a nice steak, but I reckon it was freako counrty music night, lap guitars and banjos not my thing. Had a few drinks at the club just off main st, near police station - was early so nobody around......I swear I saw a girl wearing a Michael Jackson glove, yes only on one hand!

Amen to that - used to race my laser out off Devonport when I was a whipper snapper - wrap the sail around the mast a couple of time to reef it, head out of the river and hang on! Some awesome runs broad reaching down big swells, and some good stacks.

Maybe. Don't know where the "northerners" get their gear. There is a sailmaker down here (Hobart)who sells some new and secondhand stuff, last time I looked he had a fair range. Also a regular sailer down here is an agent for Exocet boards and some other brands for sails, masts, booms etc. And I think there's another bloke who deals in stuff. Another option is to drive to Melbourne and get gear from the shops there, if you have a car that is. Or if you know what you want they can freight. Or the Seabreeze Buy and Sell section. But probably better off getting second hand gear to learn with, because you'll soon want to upgrade once you get the hang of the basics.

SouthernGirl. Get a Starboard GO board. One listed on seabreeze in SA. Do not buy anything old on the basis that it is "suitable for a beginner" As a beginner you need everything going for you- and old junk that no one can sail is no good. The GO boards hold their value very well because they are usefull as an intermediate board also and most people seem to hang onto them because they are a good product, even just to hang onto when you want to reach someone else to windsurf.
