davea,
I recently discovered a spot on the Mandurah estaury that is excellent on WNW and NW, it's the Coodanup Foreshore, about 2 km of foreshore to Pick from depending on angle, very flat, and not as windy as Ocean, so would be good for beginner.
Head to Mandurah on main Highway, turn left at Coodanup Drive, turn right at T-Junction and you will hit Coodanup Foreshore.
Closer to Perth is Applecross, which is good on NW. Having sailed Applecross on many a NW, I would say "conditions wise" Coodanup is better "usually no-one there", However, socially you'd be better off sailing at Applecross "big crowd", it's fun to get to know some of the crew in the crowd

, usually a pretty friendly lot
