Hi Everyone, am I glad i found this site. I have some questions regarding gear. I have been using an ancient original windsurfer, and some old shortboard from the 80s so far. So my knowledge of modern windsurfers isn't too great. The sails are old and kind of crummy compared to the epic modern ones. The shortboard has trouble planing and it really needs 20 knots plus wind to get moving. It has three small fins at the back, like a surfboard.

Question 1. Could those three fins be the cause of some severe drag and should I put on one large single fin much like newer boards or should I invest in a new board and rig?

2. Do most modern windsurfers have a common mast foot? The ones I've been using have different ones. For example, can you buy any any modern sail and connect it to any modern board.

3. If I see an ad/prices for sails, does this generally include mast and wishbone? Do they normally come as a set?

4. Where are good places to buy used, but still good/modern windsurfers in Sydney? Is Ebay the way to go, or is it shotty and unreliable?

Thanks for your time.

Q1.

Three fins (thrusters) have been known to be slower, but usually not noticable, but with an oldschool board i have no knowlege about i cant really tell you.

Q2

All modern boards use a universal mast track, the only differeintial is the UniJoint whether it be single pin or double, and yess all sails will connect to these.

Q3

No i dont know of any sails that are sold as kits, with the boom and mast, however you can buy started packs wich come with this. the great thing with modern gear is it all pretty universal, most sails with fit on a 400 and 430 mast, and most people can get away with one boom,

Q4,

Dont have clue in sydney about shops but check out this sites buy and sell, Its great!

But what i would advise is getting your self a modern shape sail, and a newer board, (2000 and up [sail and board]) to make it easier and more enjoyable.

Hope this helps

Sounds like you have an old bombora tri fin (tri fins are back in vogue now). Ditch the old gear. You can get some used gear that will be lighter, easier to use and a huge jump in performance over what you have now.

There is plenty of gear available on the 'buy and sell' part of this forum, however if you are not familiar with the new gear you are best going to a shop for advice.

Go and see Sam or Chris at WindSurfnSnow at Longreef. They will give you good advice for an initial set up and once you get familiar you can then get more used bits from this site.
