Hi Windsurfers!
PWA chairman Jimmy Diaz: #8220;I believe these are very exciting times for the PWA. There is a lot of energy and thought being put into developing a stronger, healthier tour which will help in the growth and promotion of our great sport on all levels. I look forward to working together with the media, event organizers, and other associations to bring about the necessary changes to accomplish this."

My name is Peter and I am an international student from Austria and at the moment doing a Master in Sportsadministration/management at Curtin University in Perth.
One of the reasons why i came to this place is that you have really great windsurfing conditions. Although Austria has comparatively bad conditions, PWA disciplines took place this year (Podersdorf).
I am thinking about creating a proposal to send to the pwa worldtour outlining why Perth or some other locations in WA should host the pwa worldtour. This is also part of an assignment i will do for my uni-course. But it is not just an assignment for me.....windsurfing seems to become an addiction and a passion for everybody who experiences it, as was the case for me.
In Fact it is my first month in Perth and Australia, and despite still knowing little about Perth and windsurfing here i believe this place should be part of the pwa worldtour.

I am trying to collect information about details which will emphasise my proposal, for example:
- Perth/Location attributes
- Specific venue/s to be used
- Accomodation available for athletes, officials and spectators
- Potential Sponsors
- Marketing Opportunities
- any other relevant information
you think could help WA secure the event.

As i said, it is not just an assignment for me, i would really like to see the worlds best riders ripping in WA, and i guess you as well.
If you like the idea , i would be pleased if you tell me your thoughts about the issue and give me even more specific information about the things i listed above.I would be very thankful for your contribution
My e-mail adresse is [email protected]
Cheers Mates, cu on the water

Great idea Pete. My recomendation would be to talk to anyone that was involved with or sail in the world cup event that was held in Fremantle in I think 2000. All the ideas were good but the event did not go very smoothly and left people with a poor inpression on what Perth has to offer.

There is a lot of experienced people in Perth so hopefully come out of the wood work and give you some help.

Thank u Tim!
Did u go there and watch it? What were your impressions of the event? Some core reasons why it didn´t go smoothly?
Do you know who organized it?
Did they combine the event with let´s say entertainment like a pop-concert and places where people could go to party and meet riders?
I wish i could get to know some windsurfers beeing involved with it.
Oh yeah and besides...if someone wants to sell a toyota hiace van....i am really interested, cause i need a possibilty to take my gear to the beach.
Well, thanx again Tim for your commitment, hope more windsurfers like you are concerend about our sport and post some words for this topic!
Have a nice weekend!
Cheers
Peter

Wasn't there a PWA slalom / racing event in Perth in 1993 ? And then there was the PWA wave sailing event in Esperance in 1997 which didn't get any wind. I didn't live in WA then so can't give you any info. Any event should be held when there is most likely to be wind ie January or February which may not suit the PWA.

There is not a lot of money in Windsurfing in Australia, mainly because unlike Europe there are not many windsurfers and there is no media interest because the average Australian cannot relate to it. Most would rather watch lawn bowls or netball on TV. Your biggest challenge therefore will be finding enough sponsors. For the last 2 years a professional kiteboarding event was held here in Perth but for this year it has been cancelled due to a lack of funding.

Check out the following topics in the kiting section:

Good luck, I hope you succeed. I would love to see a PWA event here. Although on second thoughts it may attract more visitors and make places like Lancelin even more crowded. [}:)]

As holgs said Perth was a PBA (pre PWA) stopover prior to '94. Maybe try the mauisails forum and try to catch Phil McGain's attention- he could give you info (i think he won the event in '93) and also has extensive experience with the runnings of the PWA.

Hi. I think you'll find the Freo event was the ISAF World Windsurfing Championship held around November 1997. I have a t-shirt from it showing the sponsors.
The event before that was about 1993, i think i still have the tv coverage of that somewhere on an old video tape......
Good luck.

Hey does anyone rememebr when the gravity games are on?

I always thought that would be a good thing for the PWA or at least WWA to jump on the back of, and run a freestyle event 1km away on the river. Naturally the organisers didn't even think of windsurfing, they went straight to the new "cool" teabagging.

I think it is in Early Oct so it is just into flukey wind time.... if it was Dec you'd be more confident in organising a freestyle.

If I were to organise PWA here I'd make it Freestyke at Gravity Games, followed by road trip to Gnaraloo for a wave event. Make sure the news are right onto it so all of WA sees some sh!t hot wavesailing on the news

hi mates!
Sounds like it is a problem of sponsorship and marketing of the sport.
Having Red Bull as a sponsor...problem solved!I should talk to Didi Mateschitz, send him a proposal as well.
I am sure you heard about:www.redbullstormchase.com
thanks for your info!!!!!!!

Pete,

Try Ian Young. I'm sure if you search for his details here you'll get them. He organises kitesurfing events and organised the KPWT event at the Gravity Games the last 2 or so years. I'm sure he'd help you out with some advice.

The gravity games is a **** time of year for wind. The KPWT were forced to drop it this year as the Gravity Games organisers were not happy with the kiting event. I think it was mainly because we had to kite at Cott due to the flukey winds. They like everything at the one location on the river.

There's quite a few hurdles to get through on the river, like approval from the Swan River Trust. But Ian could fill you in. If you can't find his details here, PM me and I'll give you his mobile no.

Cheers

if it's freestyle than i think perth.
have a wave event in margaret river.

the reason i think the media doesn't have an interest in windsurfing is because everytime i see it on tv it is just boring slalom ****. people can't relate to any extreem sport really. but everyone likes to watch it cause it looks cool so you need to shot someone ripping it up in some mast high waves instead of someone just sailing back in forth.

if there was a some good footage then maybe try to get it on the TV shot FREE that is channel 10 some weekends.

they cover all different exteem sports

Back in the 93 PWA event while watching the racing one of the local wavesailers decided to sail straight through the slalom event while they were racing because it was HIS beach. He got into a full on yelling abusive arguement with one of the organizers. He now goes under the user name of WAVESLAVE. Well done "slave" care to defend your actions for back then.

Thx brooksy....i will try to get in contact with Ian....sounds like he is experienced!
The marketing of windsurfing should be improved.......no doubts!
But i fear you can´t attract people just by giving them a competition.....you need to have a hole program of entertainment as well....for instance a concert.....then you will have even more possibilities to raise funds.
cheers mates
