Two Windsurfers are far apart, directly sailing towards each other on a collision course.
Windsurfer A is travelling at 40kph.
Windsurfer B is travelling at 60kph.

At the very moment that the two Windsurfers are exactly 100kms apart, a seagull (which has been hitching a ride on Windsurfer B) commences its flight towards the slower Windsurfer A. The seagull travels at exactly 90kph.

When the seagull reaches the slower Windsurfer, it turns back and heads for the faster Windsurfer. When it reaches the faster Windsurfer B, it turns back to Windsurfer A and so on until the two Windsurfers collide.

The question is this; How far has the seagull flown when the two Windsurfers collide??????????????????

90 kms

A & B are travelling towards each other at 100km/h and have 100 km to travel. So take 1 hr.

The Seagull travels 90 kms in one hour.

Boy the wind really is in the wrong direction this morning....

i dont think the seagull does 90km.

theres no way a seagull can do 90km in one direction, then 90km in the other direction. it would break its wings off trying to do snap turns.

You are not taking into account acceleration / deceleration of going into a snap turn, only velocity. Therefore, you answer is flawed, and incorrect.

anyway, wheres the wind i wanna kite.

Hey Robbo,
The seagull does big, wide, banking turns, maintaining the speed of 90kph thru-out at all times. Does that lie sound at all convincing??

while initially that sounds plausible, you have to now take into account the fact that the seagull isnt flying in a direct line anymore, therefore, it will take longer for him to reach the other guy coming the opposite way.

For him to do the same amount of curvy turns in the same amount of time, he will have to fly faster to cover the same amt of linear distance.

of course he might do fewer curvy turns now, and he still has his wings to keep him happy, and in the end he still goes 90Km in one hour, even if he's flying in a spiral.

God where's the wind?
