Having just broken my 5th rdm extension in 2yrs can you reccommend the srongest extensions that you've come across.
For the record I've had 2 snapped carbon, 2 bent ally and 1 snapped ally

maybe the chinook blue anodized rdm extension? supposed to be hardened extruded alloy. its a bit more expensive

u can get it in chinook cup attachment or europin attachment

or is it one of these you've already snapped?

No, not done a chinock yet - was thinking of them next.
Can't really blame the one that went yesterday - got caught on the rocks at buckets and was very lucky to get away with just snapping the extension. Getting the rest of it out of the mast is going to be todays challenge. There's a lot of sand in there

yea get the chinook extension, i have done tons of freestyle and forwards and stacks with mine on almost full extension and still is straight, and i bought it second hand

just reading the pommy mags, there seem to be a heap of other brands out there making extensions, booms and masts that we never see here in aus for some reason?

bent a chinook one after 7 months. didnt break but slowly got worse and worse. I think any brand that doesn't use the pin system will be better like the older NP system with the ring. they did however replace it under warranty but i lost that one into the ocean during a doggy jetski mission before i had a chance to see how long it lasts.

What brands/models broke?

I'm still using an SDM extension with my RDMs.

2 hypersonic carbons snapped
1 hypersonic ally bent
1 aeron ally bent
1 aeron ally snapped

On the plus side I haven't snapped any masts in the same time so it's probably been a decent sacrifice

Yep, Chinook seems to come out top for toughness whenever I've seen reviews.

I've got an RDM and an SDM and both totally reliable.

Severne grenade wave base rocks hard - havent snapped one - and i know crew that are landing 40 and 50 footers using them (bouj) - it a seriously good Carbon RDM base!

other option buy another mast or masts!

no ext or small extension used, no chance of breaking,short of base section breaking from stress of downhaul pressure.

the streamlined redline range of extensions are impressively well made and worth a look. id also like to know what sort of lengths you set your extension to. as previously said, you could get a longer mast section. most rdm's can mix different size tops and bottom sections to get a longer mast.

Had a long Chinook RDM for 4.2-6.4 sails for 2-3 years - use between 0 and 32cm of extnsn - its been solid as a rock despite some good beatings and heavily over down hauled sails - starting to look worn - maybe time to replace it.

Now you watch it bend next time I sail

Been using a Chinook blue anodised aluminium extension (cup base) for two years (after hearing horror stories of snapping carbon ones)... whilst I don't do 40 ft jumps on it it has taken a fair beating without complaint.

Interesting way of looking at it, how much stronger does one want the extention to be? I'd go with the "sacrificial" snapping/bending extension any day rather than watching 4 mast lowers break by now? Very interesting.

Are these damages caused by landings or leverage eg. wave force? If the former I wonder if North's RXT shock extension thingy might be the answer?

I still use the old standard diameter Chinook for my RDM masts. Never had a problem with it, but I've seen skinny extensions break regularly. I think the wider diameter tubing is stronger.

all the boys here use the pryde one (the one with stainless rollers), never seen one bend and we have some decent waves.

Have had a blue chinook skinny for years, bought it second hand and it's still going strong, despite all my kookery.

Bought a brand new spare which I use occasionally, but it just doesn't have the same battle-scars

I replace the UJ every season though.
