So I use epoxy resin and sugar. Is that right? Doesn't it dissolve? Don't ants eat it? How do i know when i have put enough on?

Hey Crash,
I normally use polyester resin and castor sugar for good results.
Drop on by if you want and we can run you through it if your not too sure.
All the best,
Sam.

No normal epoxy will brown with exposure to UV.

Honestly I reckon you're playing with fire putting polyester resin anywhere near a polystyrene cored board. Sure, it should be 'sealed' but that stuff has a habit of finding its way into unwanted places. Better safe than sorry imo. Use a UV stabilised Epoxy resin.

Don't agree, if resin can find it's way in, so will salt water, that board would way a ton!!!
Polyester (surfboard grade, nice and clear) is harder, so last's longer.
That's what I use, if it hasn't gone off (don't use it very often, and it doesn't last long in plastic containers).
It's worth getting Sam's run down, cause resin thickness is critical, too much and it really soaks up the sugar, ends up thick and heavy.
Too little and the sugar doesn't stick very well.
The top layer of sugar will dissolve off, but leave a layer behind that the resin has soaked into and bonded with.

It's not too hard, tape out where you don't want it, brush or pour resin on, even it out to desired thickness, sprinkle on sugar until there's no sign of wetness, the sugar can look a bit damp, but it's best if it's all dry, just to be safe.
When completly hard brush off excess sugar then if you have ant problems a good wash to dissolve the top layer of sugar.
The trick is resin thickness, I think 150 mls/grams should do a waveboard.
My last board, I thought I had it exactly right, just one layer of crystals tightly and evenly spaced, but it's too even, is a bit slippery.
Think now it's best if there are 2 or 3 crystal layers, then it tends to "clump" a bit causing small iregularities that increase grip.
A mate of mine tells by the feel of the brush, if it drags a lot, the resin is too thin, if it doesn't drag at all the resin is too thick.
Best thing to do is experiment on a small surface till you get the knack.

Be carefull using epoxy and sugar,a friend used this method and ended up with a rasp on his deck which took most of the skin off his leg when he stacked. It looked like he had been skinned.

1 wave board = 40mls UV resistant epoxy + 200ml caster sugar

4" roller from bunnings with about 3mm of "hair" on it 40mls = the whole board tail to nose just did three boards that way last friday for Garry, Grahame and Ian.
My old twin fin wave hog is about 5 years old now done that way and is still grippy

Wow, I'm impressed, so what about the sugar? how close are the grains?
As I said earlier on the last board I achieved a thin tightly packed surface that's a bit slippery. Think it would be better either thicker, or with less dense grains. If they were a bit further apart, they'd probably grip better.
