Ok, these southerlies have me beat. I mean, in summer so long as it is a hot day, and the sea breeze is starting to come in after lunch, you know that it is going to steadily increase for a few hours, and then steadily decrease over a couple of hours after that. So long as you get down to the water around 2-3pm you are going to have a good session.

But I have no idea about southerly winds. The come and go as they please, pick up, die off. How do you know weather it is worth heading down to the water

Harrow,

I agree with your sentiments exactly.

The southerlies we have had recently around SE Qld have been primarily frontal driven, and these are often very gusty - quite reminiscent of sailing in Melbourne. The wind comes through with the rain squalls then backs off when the sun is shining

It is a case of pot luck when the weather is like this.

With regard to this season I can recall hardly any sea-breeze based SE'ers - all frontal. First day - windiest- second day less, 3rd day marginal to none. Typically windier early in the afternoon 1-3 pm.

With the water mass now heated up to near its maximum and slightly less solar radiation, land mass temps are lower meaning less 'delta T' and hence less or weaker sea-breezes. (this is in really simplistic terms). We now have land breezes in the morning where I am cos the waster temp is > land temp (early inshore SW winds).

Dr I What do you mean by a SE seabreeze.
SE are generally caused by a high down south in the Tasman sea which cause a ridge up the east coast. This year this is just not happening.
A typical SE should blow for 3-4 days. 1st day being a bit gusty 2nd being the best and 3rd and 4 slowly easing off.
If you get a low forming around Bundy you get even a stronger ridge.
However if the low moves too close that's when the wind becomes gusty and starts to turn southerly. This is what has happened recently with the cyclones that have passed us and stuffed up the wind.
Anyway looks like northerlies this week might seeya down there.
