I am trying to repair my boom grip. Found an excellent thread on the forums, but the thread is closed so I cant ask my question about it without starting a new thread. The original thread is on this forum bt I cant link to it due to spam regulations for new users like myself.

My question is to those who have succesfully done this repair. Did you use sports tape under the heat shrink tubing or not and what were your experiences? Im doint the repair right now and am trying to decided between shrinking the tube directly onto the booms surface or perhaps first applying a layer of sports tape as has been done in the photo in the thread (blue sports tape).

Yes that or just patch where it's worn and reglue where is coming off.

Anyway, sports tape under the boom grip works great. Do the hard work and get rid of the old boom grip.

I agree, especially for carbon booms that keep their strength over time. Sometimes you're lucky and the grip comes off pretty easy, other times it takes a long time. It gets messy when using solvents so try a dry rip, with some help with a sharp knife. Glueing the new grip on the boom is the easy and rewarding part. I tend to use new original grip as you feel like having a complete new boom for just 50,- Just make sure it is worth the repair and it can still last a while.

Dont use boom-grip.... use the fishing-heatshrink-grip.

Pros:
- the heatshrink is smaller diameter than most boom-grips, which most people prefer
- less wear'n'tear on your hands
- easier to glue it
- easier to remove
- choice of colors and styles

Cons:
- typically shorter length along the boom, or need a second set of shrinking

I'd replace my boom-grip if it wasn't such a bugger to remove.

1.05 used this method old grip just fell off
