So I was having a blast down at the bay when I noticed a small tear in my sail between battens 4 and 5 (right at boom height). I decided to go in for the day (it had been four hours on the water already) when BANG! the sail ripped clean across the panel - two feet long, batten to batten.

Does anyone know any sail repairers near the inner west in Sydney. I normally go to Neil at Barracouta Sails. He does a fantastic job, but he's in Taren Point. I'd really like to get the sail fixed before next weekend.

Hey Sheartip,

Once this starts happening, especially with sails that are 4+ years old, it's time to either upgrade or just fix with normal waterproof gaffer tape. OK you fix one panel, then another panel will split so it's off to the repair shop, then something else goes, and it all ends up more expensive than just getting a reasonable 1 year old sail... Don't know what it is about monofilm but once it starts splitting that's the use by date gone.

I just tape the lot up with gaffer tape, doesn't look that flash but lets me save up for that next new sail

i use normal contact which you cover your books with, it works realy well, it has that bit of flex and it cover more of the sail, unlike the duct tape if the edges start coming up it does mater just use a sharp nife to remove a small but, i have a sail that was repaird 5 years ago with the contact and it still is in perfect condition, (well the contacted bit is) or if you wanna be extra carfull because it is in the power zone put some of the ductape on and than put the contact over it i did that on one of my wave sails i whent throu about 3 months ago and i use the heck out of it and it still is perfect, it doesnt show any signs of streach and the rip hasnt spread (same kind of problem as the one described two)
worth a shot And wots a roll of contact worht 3 dollars and thats about 6 sail repair,
but make sure you do both sides

Hey ShearTip

There is a sail loft on Victoria road Drummoyne just up from whitworths same side of the road before the lawnmower shop he is upstairs.
I have used him on occasions so he is familiar with using monofilm and has done good repairs.

Cheers

Hey Sheartip, last time I got a repair while living/working in Sydney, Neil had a courier pick up my sail from work and delivered it back within 2 days. Worked out the cheapest even with the delivery. Better repair than anyone else too.
Probably too late for this repair, but keep it in mind for next time.

Now I live one street away from him so no need for that anymore. Plus I get to add my own mark-up onto Whyners repair bill when dropping his sails off. shhh, don't say anything.

I ended up dropping the sail off at Jackson Sails in Drummoyne (Thanks for the lead) Will have it back on Friday, ready for the weekend! BTW, he said I should always have a roll of contact with me for quick repairs. "Sticks like s#!$ to a blanket!"
