Tore a 60 cm hole in my sail yesterday. I think if it is worth doing the whole panel would need replacing. Can anyone suggest a good repairer in NSW or Vic to send it to.

Opinions on cost effectiveness of panel replacement?

Sail is about 2003/2004 Neil Prde V8 6.6 and seemed to be in good nick, nice and clear, not faded. I was suprised it tore so easy (driver error)

Shipping it to and fro may make it uneconomical to repair the sail this way. Most good sail (boat) repairs (lofts) should be able to do this type of repair - ei: panel replacement. Try looking around Eden etc. for a sail loft - ask at a local marina for recomendations. Or get in contact with Angie who runs a sailboard hire in Merimbula, he may be able to point you in the right direction.

We don't hate windsurfers (I'm one too), it is that monofilm is a pain to work with, sand gets on the table and in the machines and to do a proper job it takes a lot of unpicking.
Then again I'd rather work with monofilm than ripstop (kites).

Yeah true, hate is a very strong word... Maybe dislike... But ive spoken to a few sail repairs and the first reply to "hey im a windsurfer and...." is "i dont do windsurfers"

Why do some people dislike us so much?!

As mentioned above, sailmakers might dislike fixing windsurfer sails because the sails are sandy and dirty when they arrive in the loft. I guess most dingy and yacht sails are fairly clean by comparison. Plus the fact that windsurfer sails are pretty small and use heaps of plastic compared to boat sails must make them a comparative pain to work on.

Lindsay Irwin here in Victoria (actually my neighbour across the road!) does good windsurfing sail repair jobs - when he isn't winning 14ft skiff world championships... He says windsurfing sails are indeed a pain. Yup.. sand etc is annoying, thats true, so i have always washed the sail clean before dropping off, but the other thing he mentioned was the damn battens. Reckons on some sails it can take as long to take the battens out so he can do a clean stitch as it does to do the stitching.
That said, he reckons that kites are a pain cos unlike monofilm, their material can be any colour and hence are a bugger/impossible to match.
