After 2 years in Darwin (read no sailing for fear of fauna in the water), a move south is imminent. What’s the Melbourne scene like? Are any events (slalom/formula) planned this summer?
Sin, Welcome to Vic.Hope you bough a very good warm wetsuit. Its going to hurt after being in the tropics.Best to check the Windsurfing Victoria site closer to summer for race info or the two Melb shops. The Comps comming up are all (friendly)speed events. Al,s in Oct and Speedweek in early Nov.Both at Sandy point(2.5hrs sth of melb)Theres also the T1 GPS Team Challenge that on now. Hope that helps
There is the wave comp that is held at Sandy Point front beach, during the speed carnival + some other wave events during the summer. And the occasional slalom event on the bay.
There is also an up-coming "start of seasion" Windsurfing Victoria get together sooner or later.

Depends on what you call "flat water"... When the summer sea-breeze is strong (about 15-20kn), it pushes up a nice 3-4 ft rolling swell, which eventually makes its way up the bay so wave gear is quite popular.
On the lighter days, the formula gear works well; when it hits 25+ the bay turns into a washing machine.
