This is probably a really stupid question, but I'm just wondering, on this websites wind prediction charts, will seabreezes be present? Just looking at the graphs for the last couple of days, there hasn't been the best wind predicted, but it seems from the live readings most afternoons enough wind has kicked in to go sailing.

Just want to know if I got time off and go to the beach even thou the prediction doesn't look too flash, will still be able to get a sail 90% of the time? Just wanna know thanks!

ironically, for SE qld the seabreeze website does not factor in seabreezes, but just the prevailing winds, or so it seems we've been noticing this for the last couple of springs summer periods

So just for example, the forcast for tomorrow looks like 'no wind'. But if I go to wello tomorrow midday, you think I will get a sail?

Seabreezes up here I think work more with a northerly system than a southerly one...

For example check this out:
magicseaweed.com/Northern-Australia-Surf-Chart/36/

When do you think that big southerly bullet will hit?
Will it push air out of the way as it approaches?
When's rain forecast?

Now cross reference with this:
www.seabreeze.com.au/Info/wind.asp

and you'll be thoroughly confused and just flip a coin like I do

i don't think it's hot enough yet for good seabreezes. but thursday next week is maybe starting to look better. the bom is very good at picking seabreezes on moreton bay.

at the moment we will get a few light seabreezes around 10 knots late and maybe a little stronger (15 knots) after 3pm. the rest of the time will be the southerlies/northerlies/westerlies etc.

most of the good wind at the moment is system driven. ie. northerlies, southerlies, westerlies. they are created by the pressure gradient between the highs and lows as they move west to east across australia. the higher the gradient the stronger the wind.

very basically,

wind is the result of the change in pressure over a given distance.
usually the pressure difference between high and low systems reacting against each other.

Unfortunately A "high" by itself won't produce much wind due it's surrounding stable atmosphere so it means good fishing weather. however a decent size high will most likely result in very good seabreezes if the temp difference between the ocean and land are high.

unlike a high, a "low" by itself can produce wind, because they tend to have a large pressure gradient across a short distance and typically are the result of an unstable atmoshpere. a cyclone is an example of this.
Cyclones typically need warm water temps above 26.5 deg and thunderstorms to form. you also need SE trades below the monsoonal band and NW trades above the monsoonal band to really fire things up and get the rotation flowing. cyclones tend to travel SE in direction once formed.

from checking vandos gps data overr 4 years and cross referencing that back against the bom archive charts it seems to get 25knot plus seabreezes we need a dirty big high over us and a big difference between water temp and land temp. (10 deg celsius) look at the forecast temps in ipswich for a guide. i am going to pay more attention this summer and also look at water temps.

i have tried to find a magic chart to let me know what seabreeze strengths are associated with particular temp differences but have had no luck.

oh yeah,

the other way to pick a seabreeze is look at the clouds on the day.

i haven't got to figuring cloud formations out yet but it does work.

p.s nice site decrepit. lets hope the NW it is predicting keep coming....... kirra deserves it.

Ive been saving my GPS data since Jan 05.
I generally always take my gps so I can see how much I have sailed in a year. 2005 was a great for us (in brizzy) with both SE and NE wind.
I can also look at the data to see how how strong the wind was.
We had allot of NE 25+ knots in 2005. But since then the wind has been on the decline with 2 seasons of poor SE and the NE never really got above 20knots let hope this year better.

Gestalt it would be interesting comparing the water temp from 05 to now.

hi vando,

yeah, we can do that. the bom keeps everything on database.

i found this link today about cloud formations associated with seabreezes. it is an american thing but can be applied to a typical seabreeze senario.

http://www.metlink.org/data/review.php?ID=1098

read the bit tittled. CAN YOU SEE ANY SMALL TO MEDIUM-SIZED CUMULUS CLOUDS?

or this link

hi swoosh,

i reckon good seabreezes next week.

seabreaze is forecasting temps around 28deg but the bom is saying 32.

the bom stuff also said seabreezes are strongest when we have a nw wind feeding things along in the morning and that is also the forecast.

looks good.
