I've heard rumours of one at the Bombie.
Anyone know what happened / is happening?

I heard about it yesterday - happened late last week by all accounts. This is how it was described to me - don't sue me if I get it wrong though.
Apparently some guy was slogging around, not quite planing, the noah came up from behind & had a go at the back of his board. He was pitched forward onto his sail from the impact of the shark (possibly a Mako) where the shark had another go at him thru the sail as he was lying on top of it. By all accounts he fought the shark off & got back to shore. Within 30 mins there was a masive traffic jam attempting to head south...!

I was at the 3 mile camp when the incident happened. One of the Geraldton locals sailed out from the key hole at the camp on Friday afternoon in light winds. He was out the back of the bommie and his board stopped suddenly and he was thrown forward onto his sail.A shark around 8 feet had bitten the back of the board leaving a teeth marks the size of a large dinner plate. I can confirm this as I saw the board afterwards. Apparently the shark then launched its self onto the sail and the guy ended up with grazes down his legs from the abrasive skin of the shark. In the confusion they separated and he managed to water start and and head backin. One of the fishermen saw the board and made the comment it was red and white like the most popular lure in Australia and it was no suprise to him fish would be interested it being trawled throuhg the water at around 8 knotts.
Everyone at the camp was in a state of shock for aout 5 minutes and then went sailing again. Mind you the surf line up was pretty quiet the next day.

Thanks old Git, I am glad the guy got away with little more than some scrapes, I am also glad it was not one of my mates.

Cheers GT

I'm amazed that the thing launched itself onto the sail! I always thought that if I had a shark encounter I would just jump onto my sail to create a barrier between me and it.

That's why I only sail X-ply

Yet another good reason not to kite surf.

Maybe thats why that kitesurfer was wearing shorts over his wetsuit, to hide the brown stain...

I can't believe he got back in the water to do a water start. If it was me, I would have sat there until I drifted in to shore or into South Africa.

What about the bl oody fisherman. They are so smart. They have an answer for everything don't they.

Because of the interest in the the shark incident I have uploaded the photo of his board in the windsurfing photo section under shark bite.
The comment about lying on the sail when being attacked is probably a good idea. Apparently when the shark launched its self on the sail it actually got stuck between the boom and the sail and was more intersted in getting off the sail than having lunch. This probably saved this guys life.I am sure will here more about this event.
There already an email joke going around in Geraldton which has got a red and white board and a red and white lure side by side suggesting, Can you spot the difference?

"red and white board and a red and white lure"
Pardon my ignorance but I've always thought that these big fish were colour blind. Any forum member with an expert opinion on this ?

Looks like they can see in colour, but their blue/green sensitivity is a lot better than their red:

Old Git do you have photos of the top of the board?
Where was his foot on the board?
In the foot straps?
It looks like it was bloody close

Far from an expert opinion, but the Myth Busters episode on what colours sharks attack was very very thorough, and indicated it was totally random over the 6-10 colours they tested.

I think it is more shape and time/place/ circumstance. That is an all black wettie with fins on (aka 'body boarder') looks shape-wise (and movement) like a seal.... their favorite tucker down here.
A sick shark that can't chase prey is more likely to come in close for the easy kill on a swimmer.

i think i'd be even more worried if I was a kite surfer as dangling on the end of those fishing lines "you" would look like the lure.

see you gotta' get back into long boards...it would take the shark a heck of a long time to chomp its way thru one of em' and you can still sail a long bord with a pillion passenger.

well thank god he got thru it.....heres to he.,

Yes your right the story should be in the paper and on TV. The guy it all happened to arrived back yesterday into Geraldton from Gnaraloo and I have heard GWN were trying to contact him. Hopefully he can tell the story first hand and release a few more photos.
The answer to Greenrooms question was that the top of the board just ended up with lacerations into the deck pad and happened on the opposite side of the board to his foot. This is what makes this such a narrow escape as if it had happened on the same side as his foot he would have got bitten and what followed would be alot different.

Glad to hear you made it Marc! Brings back memories of my first trip to Gnaraloo in 85. Was sailing at the Bombie on my own (only 2 of us up there anyway-no camping at Gnaraloo back then). On a big swell I saw a big black shape in front of the swell, got a bit closer and saw the big square nose-yep a huge shark, it took off as soon as i got close.
Anyway have had heaps of time in the water since then (swimming in with broken gear, kiting, surfing), must have been lucky! Seeya.

Out of all the surf spots, the bluff/turtles/gnaraloo would have to be the place where I have seen the most sharks. Heck... I have even fed them on the beach at the bluff and fish rock halfway out the point.
I have had no where near as much sightings any where else along the coast.
But still I'd rather be in the water with a shark up there than down here.
this is the time of the sightings around perth. Even attacks at cott have been end oct start of nov.
I always think of Ken Crew about this time of year as I was in the water at the time of the attack.
A shocking storey. My friend was in the blue duck when it happened and said it was the most awful thing she has ever seen.
A white the size of a car throwing kens body around like a rag dole.
Damn I made myself scared now

Thanks Greeny, I found out where your talkin.

The image you posted gives you enough info to find the place.

I think you will see me there one day. Not naming it though as I want it to be secret too.

BTW. On the shark topic, I have heard that your ******** spot is more sharky than Gnaraloo. Least there is heaps of fish around these areas for the sharkies to stay satisfied (hopefully).

Hi guys
the best side of the story is
that I'm still here to tell it
I still believe there are more flies up in gnaraloo at times than sharks in the water
and most sharks live on land and have two legs
keep on sailing surfing and kiting
cheers Marc
