Recently as per the photo (link below) I bent my skinny mast extension. How it happened is still a mystery, it was certainly not during some major 'incident' and I only ever run it up to mid extension (middle hole). Anyway it got me thinking. I've got quite a few broken top section laying around in the garage (also see photo) and coincidently they are exactly the same diameter ;) Now I haven't run any calculations on it (not that I know the loads it experiences anyway) but I was wondering if anyone else has tried this. By 'this' I mean replacing the aluminium section with a carbon piece from an old top section? To me it looks like a winner :P
I might do a quick calc to compare the top section bending stiffness to the alu section just to make sure i'm not being slightly optimistic but I reckon she'll be right; using 'rule of thumb' engineering :D
if it is a prolimit one, they are apparently quite soft alloy and bend easily. The blue anodized chinook ones seem to be the pick of them for strength. About $170 but i think they only come in chinook cup type, and not euro pin
What brand is that extension? Just so I can avoid it in future
You might have trouble making the hole area in the carbon strong enough, but then again I could be talking out my ar$e. Suck it and see, what's there to lose?
hey CJW, off the topic a bit, do you have a spare uni joint for Whyner? Looks like its going to be on at Peggys tomorrow (Sunday). If not, no worries, but otherwise we'll see you there.
Yeah it's a pro limit one, fairly think wall ally (3mm+) but looks like a fairly low grade. I'll give it a crack, worst that could happen is a bit of a swim :P
qwerty I've got a spare uni with the cup style (not pin) connector. Can use the whole extension if need be but it won't work with a skinny mast. Don't have a spare pin uni.
Low tide is 2pm I think, swell should be up too tomorrow. Just had a quick session at Peggy's then, flat as.
I have the same extension and bent it 6 months ago, Im pretty sure it bent over the rail of board in white water. I bent it back straight in a vice and have had no problems since but it would have weakened it for sure.
