Disgruntled with the tea leaf swilling predictions of the Bureau of Meterology ?

Let down once too often by predictions of strong wind warnings and 20 knots plus... only to be disheartned by 12 knot sub planning drivel ?

Well no longer place your potential wind and water time in the fickle hands of tarot card reading bafoons... an accurate wind and wave forecaster has been found !

www.magicseaweed.com

Follow the links on your left to your region
Click on the swell charts (top middle banners)

Click through, swell, wind, ect ect and start planning your sickies, sailing time and surf trips with a little more accuracy

Comrade Haircut

The wind graphs give you 6 hourly updated computer model forecasting
When you get to the wind graph hit the play button and it will generate through 120 hrs of wind forecast for your region

Similar to a 7 day forecast but its in graphical form which represents wind direction (arrows) and wind strength (colour... and what's more you can actually see how the front will move tthrough and the wind/swell it is likley to generate

the scary part of the site is the article about hurricane watch where it says we are due for weaker than average easterly breezes.....

It's hidden in behind the Swell Charts link.

I was told that the British equivalent of the BOM always added about 10 mph onto the stronger winds so they wouldn't be sued when a boat owner destroyed his boat in winds that were stronger than forecast. Does that make sense? Just had a lunchtime beer in the sun and am now unable to think properly.

What's the view on Seabreeze? When does the forecast become more realistic (obvioulsy 3 weeks away is pushing it, but so does 2 days on seabreeze - forecasts can change massivley through the day)? Do the tea leaves suggest wind at Woolgoolga?

Yep. And that's what our bunch of no-hopers do as well. Ever since the 1998 Syd - Hobart, when they conveniently forgot to predict the 100ft waves and 90+ knots of wind that turned the boats into splinters.

Its a joke. They already add a disclaimer on the site about how waves can be up to twice the height and wind can be 40% stronger than what they say. That, on top of their usual inflated predictions, really make them useless.

Why can't they just say something along the lines of "this is what we REALLY think the wind will be....but sh!t happens so be prepared for anything".

Hey Kremlin,

That site uses the same model as WindGuru (NWW3) so the predictions should be pretty much identical. I also noticed that there isn't a way to display wind strength predictions in knots. It's nice to have tide information visible though. The animated wind map looks cool

At least with windguru you can create your own 'fudge factor' for your favourite spot, (eg. if your favourite spot has a big hill just to the north of it, you can put in a fudge factor to drop off a couple of knots from the forecast for only northerlies), tailoring expectations to reality.

Agreed. It's not really weather forecasting anymore. And it's irresponsible to overforecast just as much as it is to underforecast. Have you heard the whack when an underpowered kite falls out of the sky and onto the beach?

The bureau are not gonna get it right every time and we shouldn't expect them to, but we should be able to expect them to give us the most accurate interpretation of the information they've got - without an exaggerated "safety" factor. Like qwerty pointed out, they've already got the disclaimer.

It's the lawyers' fault. They've convinced society that when bad stuff happens to you it's someone else's fault. Many people won't take responsibility for their own decisions and actions.

Another great site for surf / wind forecasting (aimed mainly at surfing) is www.swellnet.com.au Every 3 days there is a written spiel about upcoming conditions in all states. The site is run by Ben Matson who is used as the surf forecaster for many of the large Pro surfing events. Keep it in mind for when you are planning your next 'sickie'
