Lake Keepit is used for sailing, but I wonder what the wind is like? It is 2/3rd the size of Sydney Harbour.

Oh Needsalt,

I feel for you. Finding a windsurfing spot near Tamworth will be the least of your worries, putting up with the mouth breathing flannel wearing banjo players would concern me!

I didn't sail back then, but I do remember one place where they have sailing races (catamarans and the like), when I was there watching the races there was one windsurfer who was competing as well. It was a handicap system. That was the first windsurfer I'd ever seen Not sure how close it is to Tamworth though.

I'll ask my old man, he'll know.

I know how you feel. I've been in Wagga for 4 weeks now probably 2 more to go. landlocked. and the wind is sooooo gusty when it comes. Sailboard dancing, a new skill. 0-20 knots. Its horrible. Least I get to go back to good ol sa even if it is freezing by now. Thankfully there is real wind there. I hope you find somewhere good. Otherwise take your land yacht???

Thanks for your suggestions. Ducati is right. I am clearly mad. My mortal error was getting stuck with a partner who doesn't appreciate windsurfing. And now I may have to pay the price.

I'd really appreciate any info from your old man Nebbian. Thank you!

Maybe divorce is the only viable option...

Hey Needsalt,

He's come up with the goods. Turns out the dam I was thinking about (Malpas) is too far away, but lake Keepit is closer. I've sailed on Lake Keepit in a small boat, it would be good to blast the cobwebs off your board, anyway.

Here's what Dad had to say:
Lake Keepit would be the closest to Tamworth.

To find it on google earth, go to

30 deg 51 min south, 150 deg 30 min east.

Keepit Dam is a water storage dam on the Namoi River in New South Wales, Australia. Keepit Dam retains water from the Namoi River 13 kilometres upstream of its junction with the Peel River for flood control and irrigation. It is also used for local recreation, fishing and water skiing. It is the location of one of the premier soaring (gliding) sites in Australia - the Lake Keepit Soaring Club. It is located between the towns of Gunnedah and Manilla about 400 km north of Sydney.

The dam was constructed in 1961 and Lake Keepit has a storage capacity of 425 000 megalitres and provides town water to the town of Walgett via the Namoi and Barwon Rivers, it also provides irrigation water for the Namoi Valley. The Keepit Hydroelectric Power Station generates electricity when water is released.

Information about KEEPIT DAM

Keepit Dam is located to the north west of Gunnedah on the Namoi River. This dam is approximately two thirds the size of Sydney Harbour.

It was established to regulate the flow of the Namoi River to meet water needs downstream for agriculture, particularly the irrigation of cotton. It also has its own Hydro-electric Power Station.

The Foreshores Park on Lake Keepit is a popular recreation spot for all manner of water sport with sailing and speed boat regattas being regular occurrences.

Lake Keepit is two thirds the size of Sydney Harbour. Located in the Lake Keepit State Park, just 36 kms from Manilla along the Rushes Creek Rd, it is an ideal place to spend a day or even longer. There are great amenities and some fantastic activities that include sailing, skiing, gliding, swimming, fishing, tennis, skating, walking trails or just relaxing around the campsite.

Lake Keepit also offers a variety of accommodation options that include cabins, ensuite cabins, 2 bdrm chalet, camp-otels, camping and powered sites. There is superb facilities including a well-stocked licensed kiosk, selling all camping requirements. The camp kitchen is a fantastic gathering place for families and friends, with a fireplace, electric BBQ, sinks, tables and benches.

There is an entry fee per vehicle to the park.

Needsalt,

You need counselling. If its true love he will move to Maui for you not kn Tamworth. If he wont do this he obviously loves country music more than he loves you. He must be an utter bogan and is unworthy of your attentions. Don't throw yourself away. Life isn't over til your dead. There are plenty of fish in the sea and plenty of non-bagan men who will do ANYTHING for a hint of a rumour of a promise of a root. You might just enjoy the single life more. Don't wait a lifetime to find out.
