I was thinking about shearwater, but what's some extra petrol between friends

Now just got to try to remember where it is!

btw got in a cheeky sail at Cudgen lake today, tide was very low and even with my smallest fin was scraping on the gybes. Difficult to learn those carves when the whole board stops dead when you go downwind!

i'll be there!

can't wait. it has been a while since i sailed so close to home.

hobie,

VP has it all. it's good for freestyle, bump and jump, plus can get small waves at high tide. has an awesome speed bank and is only 5 minutes from home.

nebbian, sounds like an expensive gybe. see you at VP. you'll love it. i'll bring the beer this time!

admittendly the T hasn't been all that big-boat-wake friendly the times i've been out this spring. Lots of potentials but by the time I reach them they have either been too rounded or had disissipated. I've missed many good days there for it this year's season so far. I still reckon it is the place for your first. At mid-to-low tide the boat swells hit the shallow sand area and stand right up, and u can hit them side on plus slightly down wind which is perfect for the first few attempts at them

i was buggered. got to the point where when i gybed i couldn't grab the boom properly after the sail flip.

both you and nebbian were crankin for ages. everyone else was stuffed after a couple of hours. you guys must have sailed continuously for about 6 hours. that's impressive....

good news is i have now taken my "TOW" from 15 mins between rests to 30 mins. ....

it was a great day. i got a couple of jumps, managed a tack, avoided this crazy guy jumping over me upside down

i still got the beers. thought you guys might have come back a little earlier. will save them till next time.

On a serious note, there was a somewhat dodgy guy hanging around. after my first session i sailed in to put on more downhaul and noticed a car cruising the carpark. i had left my rrd on the ground in front of my car. he stopped and made small talk with me and then dissappeared. came back again an hour later with some people in a ute. made more small talk and asked me if i would sell a board. told me he wanted to get back into the sport.

the whole thing was very suss in my books, but maybe he was genuine, i don;t really know. i won't be so casual there in future, i don't normally bother to wind up the windows.

Hey Gestalt,

What a day!

I saw you do a tack, was very impressed. But really, nothing holds a candle to this milestone:
I managed my first carve gybe ever!!! And a couple of hours later I did another one, to prove it wasn't a fluke. Holy toledo I've only been trying to plane out of gybes for like 6 months, finally with the right conditions it all came together.

You couldn't have asked for better conditions at the strip, wind was awesome, lots of sails out on the water with some familiar smiling faces underneath. Vando was his usual self, at least I think it was him, all I could see was a blur that made me look like I was standing still.

Eventually the only thing that made me stop sailing was getting really dehydrated, if I'd had a drink out there I would have sailed till dark... what an awesome session

hi nebbian,

congrats on the carves!! if only we had a boat then we could take the drinks to the strip, maybe even setup a bbq as well over there. all that time on the water lately has been doin good things by the looks of it. you ripped!

hey vando,

yeah, second that for sure.

how good is VP that it can turn on so much different stuff all in one day. earlier was better for the wind. around 12pm it started pumping. definately 30 knots coming through. the swells were better earlier too. about 0.5m and breaking along the bank at the eastern end of thompsons off the mangroves. had to gybe with the front foot in the strap to stop myself bouncing out. it was funny to see all the speed guys turn up as the tide dropped. a bit like the next shift coming on.

i did the run over to the speed strip in the arvo once the tide went out. I was knackered by then so i left once i got there. it must have just got better as the tide dropped even more. it was heading towards glassy when i was there but still a little bumpy. i hear you and pierre clocked some very decent times..

did anyone get photos?

hi mikey100,

i will keep an eye out next time. certainly lots to do this weekend. Windsurfing Queensland scored a nice breeze for the races. will be a good turn out i think. hopefully all this good wind we've been getting lately will reward the dedicated.

not sure if i can go... may end up down the coast on sunday or at VP.

Hi,

This area sound great (VP)! Im an intermediate sailer into flatwater blasting and speed sailing and am moving to sunny QLD from VIC for work and looking for an area to live.

What is wind consistency like during summer at VP, or where is the best place to sail flatwater in summer.

Spose lookin for a spot to live close to a sailing spot and airport, and reasonablely priced rentals.

Anyway lookin forward to it any feedback would be cool!

Cheers
Lenny

hi wesdawindat.

sounds like around wynnum, manly or wellington point may be what you are after. they are relativly close to the airport. 40 minutes to the airport and 30 mins to the city. rentals can be a bit pricey though.

the local sailing spots near there are wellington point (wello) and manly. both very good for blasting. those 2 areas will work in all wind directions except a southerly which is why most people these days go to VP when it is blowing south.

VP (thomsons beach) only works in SW-S-SE wind really. it is a superb spot to sail when the wind is right. During a NE seabreeze wello or manly are better spots. all the VP locals sail at point halloran which is the northern side of victoria point in summer or go to wello or manly. the real problem with victoria point is transport. trains, busses etc.

if the wind is right for VP then it is only about 30min drive from manly or wynnum. so it is still very close.

other spots are cleveland, capalaba, lota, ormiston. all except capalaba are suburbs on the water. don't tell everyone but the bayside is the best place to live. for starters it is cooler. sometimes up to 3 degrees cooler than brisbane. the constant breezes see to that. and there is lots to do as there is a good cafe culture and outdoor lifestyle. also, the area is not over crowded.

you may also want to look at the redcliffe area. it is close to the city and airport. gets the same great temps and winds but doesn't have as much flat water. it is still very good for blasting and will also work in any wind direction. you can also find small surf there if you want to push things a bit. queens beach north is the most popular spot.

Hi Lenny you weren't at sandy point a few weeks ago.
might have met you at the cafe there.
Capalaba a pretty central spot 10min to wello 15 to manly or Vicky point, 30min to the airport depending on traffic and I think the rental prices there are reasonable.

Awsome Gesalt,

Great stuff, Any one of these areas will be the go anyway i think.
Last couple of years have been driving from 1.5 hrs to go down to Geelong area or 4.5 hrs to go down too Sandy Point for a blast so it will be all too easy. Local lakes here in Central Vic are bone dry, actually i was riding my trail bike on the floor of Lake Eppolock excactly where i used to sail. What would be your most used sail size there Gesalt, talkin to some Qld guys down at SP and they mentioned 7.5m?
Vando, yeh probly was me down there for Speedfortnight ( for the weekends anyway ) Great event and a top bunch of guys, A top effort from Al hey!

for me the most common used sail is my 8.5

but it depends on your weight.

if your over 85kg i'd say 8.5, 7.5, 6.6
if your under 85kg i'd say 7.5, 6.6, 5.8
if your under 75kg 7.5, 5.8, 5

all of the stuff above is for speed and slalom.

for boards you would want your weight + 20 for light winds and something smaller for when it blows. there are some excellent speed locations up here.

normally we get 10-15 knots. lately it has been awesome 20-30 knots regularly. i've been overpowered on a 5.3 at times. so i haven't rigged the 8.5 for about 3 weeks. we seem to be having a windy season so far.

vando's the man to talk to about the ins and outs of wello and manly. he spends more time on the water than anyone and it is rumoured that he actually is half fish. he knows the place like the back of his hand. vicki point is my backyard so i go there regularly or down the gold coast. the train is another spot for speed freaks.

the speed spots are
the train (gold coast), thomsons beach (victoria point), Wello (wellington point), lota creek (manly), golden beach (Caloundra)
not quite sandy point but pretty good none the less.

it's sad to hear your lakes are drying up. that can't be a good thing! lots of the guys around vicki point and redland bay ride trail bikes so you will find some good places for that as well.

oh, and as far as night life goes. lots of pubs around but not much in the way of clubs in the bayside area. so if you want clubs you would need to go to brissy or down the gold coast.
