I was this time last year and it was windy. Didn't have my gera with me though. I think it's mostly bump & jump in wellington itself as it's quite protected, but I guess if u were to head to the coast u'd get some waves.

Speedsailing as in windy and completely flat? Not quite, but not far off.

you can speed sail at two places
waikane river mouth ( paraparaumu) 40mins north of wellington
lake ferry in the wairapara coast about 1.5 hr north east of wellington
or ring wildwinds in wellington & ask for Dave here is a mad speed sailer

Plimmerton in a NW is waves/ B&J. Lyall Bay in a Southerly is bloody cold Southerly, waves onshoreish. Inner habour has flat-to B&J.
Taranaki is 4 hours North for all time wave sailing. There is a speed spot call Tangimoana. A river mouth on the West coast North of Wellington a few hours. Just remember the wind is frontal and stong/gusty and the rivers are Snow feed. Brrrr.

I grew up there and never used anything but a 4m sail. very windy location. not so sure if much has changed over the years, but Plimmerton is fantastic sailing spot.
