I am heading to Rotto on Saturday on my mates boat. Will be surfing in the morning then hope to wave sail in the afternoon any ideas on the best place to wave sail and also where to anchor the boat.

Thanks

Best place on the island to wavesail is Rocky bay/stark bay. It is a reef about a kmilometre off shore. My parents have a mooring there are my brother and i always wavesail there when its windy.

So just moor in either Narrowneck or Stark and hopefully there will be good wind and good waves.

My mate is a surfer and is always heading to Rotto for a weekend of fun. I asked him a while ago if there was any windsurfing action over there, and he said he had never seen a windsurfer over there - too dangerous or something.

I'm still on the flat stuff, and have only tried to launch into some waves once - a disaster all round; so I wouldn't consider going there. But my comment is, that I am constantly surprised how transparent us windsurfers seem to be.

Another mate and I used to sail on the Swan on a Cat, before we saw the light and every time we sailed past Lucky Bay when the seabreeze was up, I remember this incredible image of butterfly wings flying around. It drew me in. I wonder why so many others fail to note us.

I agree with mike...which makes sense since im his bro and i sail there too...hahah
If u pick up a mooring or anchor in Rocky Bay (NarrowNeck..north side of island towards the west end) its about 2kms walk to stricklands surf break so you can keep your boat in the same spot. You can then just rig up in the arvo and sail out to the reef...its the one next to the channel to get into the bay, the wind is blocked by the land close in to the bay though, so if you are on a low-volume wave board you will probably have to land further downwind and walk back.

Its about a metre deep at the shallow spots but its a nice soft reef with lots of plant like stuff....reef...soft Wind in a seabreeze is perfect side port tack, you get some decent waves there too. I see heaps of people out there or heading further out the west end, just watch out for all the other reefs around the place!!!!

hope that helps

One of my best sails have been at rotto, prefect 30knot cross off with shoulder to half mast sets, between 3 of us for 5 hours. Without a boat its hard, but still do-able.
