Hello all, I am fairly new to windsurfing, have probably went about 20 times, I've learned most of the basics, and am looking into getting my own board, currently I am using my cousin's board, it is called a Marlin Happy Fun or something like that. So I was wondering what a good board would be, I don't want a beginner board that I will outgrow quickly, I want one that will plane well, and cruise along at a pretty good speed. I am from Minnesota, so I do all of my surfing on freshwater lakes, with average wind speed between 15 and 25 knots. I am around 5' 10" and weigh around 145 lbs. Thanks.

Get a SUP and join the WASUPs, it's the way of the future. Windsurfing alternative = ProKids Acid 48: http://www.star-board.com/viewpage.php?page_id=34 . When Learning to windsurf, you don't want a board which is too big so it inhibits your learning. Are you a slow learner

Do you have any experience with snow skiing/boarding OR, Forum Trolling?

Ahhh the Marlin Happy Fun.
Classic name for a classic board.

I learned to surf on my cousins "Johnny FunTime WedgeTrooper" that was sadly superceded by the more popular "TeenyTop Flobble Woofer".

LMAO (completely, it's gone).

I too recall the TeenyTop Flobble Woofer... Everyone wanted one. They were fully, entirely and completely SIK MAN... Of course, all I could afford was the TeenyTop Flobble Woofer immitation, the "bigarse bottom wobble floofer"!!!

If you are bigboard, BURN IN HELL.

Otherwise:
I agree, Starboard Carve 133 would be ideal. Really any freeride board around 130L will be good. Bic Techno, Fanatic Eagle, etc...

I'd recommend you don't get anything smaller than 120L though, and at least 60cm wide.

I'm a pretty fast learner and I have been snow and water skiing for as long as I can remember and have a little experience with snowboarding.

Nope, not bigboard, but I'm guessing this has something to do with Pugwash's question, "Do you have any experience with snow skiing/boarding OR, Forum Trolling? (the OR, Forum Trolling? part is hidden in with the background color)."

Thanks for all the replies guys.

Thanks for all the replies guys, I think I might go for a Starboard Carve 121, because I can get one new for $500 less than the 133 at www.the-house.com/ and DL said that I should be fine as long as I stay above 120L. And now, I am wondering what a good sized sail to start off with would be, unfortunately I don't know what is on the board I am currently using and have not been able to find any information on it. Thanks again.

I think the admins here need to learn to block people by their IP address instead of just by their user name so that every time a new users asks a question guys don't scare him or her off just because you think they are all the same person just trolling. Personally I'm not bothered by it, but I have a hard time seeing this forum ever expanding if every newbie gets flamed for asking newbie questions. By the way, I live about 250 miles away from the Great Lakes. Just because there are users asking the same question, mostly from the Great Lakes area shouldn't be particularly suspicious, because the Great Lakes are pretty damn big and I'm sure there are a lot of windsurfers around them.

The first part of that post I actually found fairly humorous, but "farty marty" That just hurts, I'm not used to that type of schoolyard abuse.

Im quite prepared to apologize profusely if I am wrong. However - go and have a good look at your cousins board that you say you are using - the 'Marlin Happy Fun' - and tell me everything that is written on it. Shouldnt be hard to do a google search on the details, and research whether this board exists or not.

Oh sorry schmarty... was feeling like I know you well now. Thought I'd give you an Oz-style nickname... Maybe one of those cultural misunderstandings... All of my friends call me the fat pirate

BTW, the schoolyard is a good place for schoolyard behaviour!

It's a good theory, but most people get a different ip address every time they connect, so in practice not possible.

Okay, I took a look at it today, and on the board, it just has a sticker that says Marlin Happy Fun on it. And this is what I remember on some of the other parts, my wording is probably a little bit off. On the box that houses the dagger board it says "Alieger System 62 Made in W. Germany." On the sail it says "Licensed by Hoyle Schweizer Produced by VB sails Holland". All that isn't rubbed off of the sticker on the mast is "ExcelMaster" I have tried searching google for some info on the board, but since the dagger board housing says it was made in W. Germany, that probably means it was produced before 1991 when the Soviet Union collapsed, otherwise it would have just said Germany, right?

Yeah, but to my knowledge, they usually get an ip in the same range, and the admins could ban the whole range. And if someone else happens to be in that range, they could just have the admin allow them, but that would be kind of an unnecessary pain for the administrators.

I like you Marty.

I can't remember what it was you wanted to know again, but anyway, I think you should use the Marlin Happy Funtime until your cousin asks for it back.
Starboard Carve 133L is your next board.

Let us know how you are going.
Have you done a gybe yet, got planing?
Anytime you come to Perth look us up.

Alright, I will stick with my cousin's board for a while long, he has never really used it much and probably never will because he is most likely a future Olympic bi-athlete and that consumes most of his time. I have got onto a plane probably 4 times and done many gybes. I can for the most part get to any point on the lake I wish to. On Sunday we had winds gusting up to 35 mph and I hit 21 knots on my GPS, it is amazing how much faster you seem to be going than you really are. Thank you for the kind words, and if I ever make it to Perth I will definitely look you up.

Jeez they got an Olympics now for bi-athletes?
Aren't they allowed to enter the 'normal' Olympics?

21 knots is a fair old speed. Most of the guys on the GPS forum haven't gone that fast.

Are you using a harness and footstraps? I guess you would have to be at that speed.

Its the normal Olympics, sorry for the confusion.

I do not have a harness, I just hang on for dear life and keep my center of gravity as low as possible. I only use one foot strap. The foot strap placement on the board is absolutely horrendous, the the front and the back straps are literally a centimeter apart.

At what speed do your eyes water so bad you can't see where you're going, board barely touch the water & sail 'lock-in' so you can't slow down?
I could've sworn I was doing 30-40kts on the weekend, (until I was overtaken by a cuttlefish shell floating past.) Scary stuff!
