There seems to be some confusion. Many windsurfers (e.g. Dutch Inn)seem to have forgotten(?) which way to steer when heading for a collision on the water.
Last year I smashed into another boarder because he sailed into me at high speed. We were heading directly for each other with me on starboard tack. As I could see we were on collision course I turned to starboard, he moved in the same direction. So I turned more to starboard, he moved in the same direction. I shouted STARBOARD and he just looked confused. BANG!!

As we recoverd in the water I asked him (
fairly politely

) why he didn't turn away. He was totally mystified by the concept (despite the fact that he had obviously been sailing for some years).
So, guys if you're heading towards another sailor,
just turn to your right (starboard) and we can all enjoy our wonderful sport even more.
The sailor on starboard tack (ie standing on the right hand side of the board)
has right of way. Clearly, though it's best if you give way whatever tack you are on.
Incidentally, if you cause a collision through ignoring the sailing rules you could be succesfully sued. Nasty.
Happy sailing to all,
Max
