As a matter of fact i do compete last year was my rookie year and at 36 i thought it was time to stop being a veiwer and start being a doer . Why oh why did i not join this great brotherhood and sisterhood of fellow windsurfers along time ago .The benefits are enormous you are covered by insurance you get to meet heaps of mad keen windsurfers (always have something to talk about ) parties every time you race just about(this is a compulsory ) oh yeh the racing 110% adrenalin all day with your mates ,how can you put a price on that? Well it seems that you can, as the numbers of competitors steadly falls every season .what do you think the reason for this is .IS it the cost of entry fee , you think that you may not be competitive enough , not enought prize money it is a shame to see hundreds of people out sailing on a good day and yet only a handful of people competing . You dont know what you are missing

Agree with your comments its a bunch of fun. Huge adrenalin rush all charging to a buoy fully powered up trying to make it around the mark. But its just to expensive for me. Carbon masts & booms. Selection of Fins. Top of the line race sails in various sizes etc etc. All that plus wave gear, free ride gear & surfboard. Divorce time !!

In saying all that I am going to try & do some friendly racing on my free ride gear this summer. Staps back & out & a big slamon fin & dirty old sail. Plus I'm a master now.

I think a lot of guys just enjoy going out for a sail with no presure on them.

I think a few people don't compete as to buy and use the latest kit is expensive. So why not start up an event on the circuit, Where you are not allowed to use equipment less than 2 years old, the retailers and importers would hate this and they sponsor the events, but you'd have more people giving it a go and it would be more skill based than having the latest and greatest kit.

flatus :

A reflex that expels intestinal gas through the anus [syn: fart, farting, wind, breaking wind]

[L., fr. flare to blow.] 1. A breath; a puff of wind. --Clarke.

2. Wind or gas generated in the stomach or other cavities of the body. --Quincy.

Instead of trying to compete with the formula guys how about running a seperate slalom type event on any gear other than formula, ie slalom, freestyle, wave gear whatever you are comfortable on.
Set up a handicap system where you get bonus points for older gear or non cambered sails etc etc.
Basically try to even the field without spending big bucks on gear you will never use and then anyone can enter, make it a fun event.
Give it some thought, toss it around, I'm sure we can get some prizes organised.

There's a move on to get something like that happening on the Mandurah esturary, especially for those no wave days. If it comes about, no doubt it will be posted.

TO paul , This is a good idea and this season there has been a new division add to the racing format and it is designed with cost in mind its the recreational division its open to all sailors , first timers ,those who would like to compete but feel they may not be competive in there recommended division .If you have raced in the past you are still able to enter this division .this is designed to even out the racing and you dont have to have the lastest kit to be competive in this class . With a few good prizes thrown in this will be a fun and rewarding class to race in

instead of going for the novice division which was limited to first year sailors, we have opted for the easy-ride/recreational division which is open to everyone..
so if you have a sail mast boom etc, you can race in this division..
freeride sailors now have their own division in a way, so you dont have to race against equipment nuts like myself...

but if you kick but, then you will see that the open division will be more suited to you.

i am selling my gear at good prices,, like $550 for a race sail and a 100% carbon mast,, you cant beat that,,
or $350 for a 6m gtx
or $100 for a 5.9m VX3..
these are good prices but am i going to give my gear away,, nup
people can work for their gear just like i did and the harder theey work, the better the gear they get.

100 bucks for a VX3 you have to be joking. those things are the biggest pain in the butt to rig. it's not even funny. Unless your watching someone else rig it that is. youd be better off selling it for parts, or atleast as scrap. talking about scrap anyone want to buy an old subaru for an over inflated price?

Life is but a dream, from which we all must wake.

"then i would have the power to remove such replies instead of responding to them!"

Haha! Fair call! I thought the post was "tongue in cheek" - I suppose it's all in how you read it ..

If you're in a hurry and your cams are a bit "tired", they can be a real pain! Popping off etc.. Sure are easier once you get the swing of it, but never as easy as a wave sail!

Enjoy .. Laurie

some cams sails are pricks to rig,, this is amplified when you are in a ruch but to imply all cammed sails are bad to rig is a shot gun statement which is not true.

but the VX3 is easy to rig,, you just slide the mast in and downhaul.outhaul etc.. i have no problems with mine even though it has 6+ cams.

I have heard in the wind, through the grape vine , on the bush telegraph that there is a new windsurfing club starting up base out of nedlands .The races will be held summer and winter .this sounds like a great idea it would save alot of driving a round to find there is no wind and will leave the mornigs free for those of us who have things to do and still make it to the races . sounds to good to be true has anyone heard of this

it would be good to see more formula racing , has any one got any ideas ? as it is a shame to have spent so much time and money getting race kit together only to use it a few times a season . has any one sailed near the austal boat factory this could be a good place plenty of flat water for big boards .

The kitesurfers have got themselves organised with the Jervoise Bay Sailing Club at woodies. They have facilities (a bar) and I believe a few containers for storing kit. I think there used to be racing down there as well. Storage would be great as Formula kit is not the easiest to cart around. With a new Olympic class on the drawaing board, it would be a great opportunity to get in with the yachties as they run races every weekend, have course markers out and safety boats.
Any one know more about this.
