Yesterday on sailing into the beach I noticed a young Dugong in distress in the shore break,speaking to one of the Kiting instructors there he mentioned that he had rung up the EPA and was told that they do not have the resourses to do anything about it.With the help from 2 kiters we put the distressed dugong onto my sailboard minus the sail and took it out into deeper water and released it.Sadly on arriving back on shore we found that the youngster had beaten us back in and was flopping around on the beach so we repeated the transporting out into deeper water again and this time were successfull as the thing was never seen again ,hopefully meeting up with it's mother.2 weeks ago I found a turtle in distress and rang the Turtle hot line and was given the same answer we can't do anything,this coming from a Department that can capture and release crocodiles in a City,pay Fat Cats a fortune to keep seats warm and ignore wildlife completly.A Bunch of Clowns I say.

Wrong department.
Next time try the Dept of Conservation and Land Management or whatever they are called in your state.
Seaworld probably have people who can give advice too.

Tried EPA and Great Barrier Reef Authority and seaworld is about 1500 kms away.If this had happened during the week the relevant persons would have shown up with a local member for gov and a tv crew saying what a good job they do,unfortunately up here they are a joke.

Speaking of aquatic wildlife, I saw on the news a 3m great white that had massive bites taken out of it, they reckon by a 6m great white. Think it may have been around Stradbroke Is. somewhere. I suppose they are always "out there somewhere", it's just when you see the evidence it gives you the jitters.

I wish the local windsurfers here would stop picking me up and putting me on thier boards and dumping me in deep water!! I'm just trying to learn how to beach start....

missed opportunity! Dugons were the originall "mermaids". At least to a sex starved seaman, 2 years in to a voyage they looked pretty good, nudge, nudge.
