Comrades
Nor wester not as strong as predicted but enough to get out on a 5.6m with the wave board at Birubi.
Nice little down the line waves.... YAR !

For those of you from the NSW wave sailing association I can report Glovey was out there with me and ON FIRE
His one handed aerials (ala Jason Polakow) are still a sight to behold and his off the lip 360's are still working a treat !
And he tells me he was holding back cos his ankle is still sore !

Comrade Qwerty
He was hobbling round a bit rigging up and walking to the water... unless it was all just a ploy to make me look and feel even more inferior (if that's possible)

Classic Birubi Conditions though, with the nor wester blowing cross off.
Would have been all time if the swell was a couple of feet bigger but hey, you take what you can get and i definately aint complaining !

Looks like some NWr's forcast for Fri and Sunday down here in the Gong. Don't typically get out much in these directions. Have sailed PKembla in W/SW and that was sweet but NW = no go there. I'm thinking maybe southern end of Bellambi or a bit south of Fairy Meadow there; Beach really curves around and faces NWish towards the North Beach end. Ideas? I suppose the 'Dang might work too, that wall must be hitting the water by now though :|

Anyone get out today? I went out at Fairy Meadow and the only way to really describe it is 0-nuclear. I was either stuck with no wind and couldn't catch a wave or stuck in 40kts which made bottom turning interesting. The gust I came in on must have been 45kts. The water was just getting chopped up and thrown everywhere, the whole board/rig was just flapping/airborne and I was hanging on for dear life. If I let go of the damn thing I swear it would have ended up at the lighthouse. Lucky I came in too because it suddenly went way West, I probably would have been on a one way ticket to NZ. What a crap sail :(

Edit: Just looked at the Bellambi AWS and when I was out there was a gust recorded at 39-62kts. No wonder it felt like the world was exploding.

qwerty and myself were out windang during that 62knot reading and yes it was a bit of a handful especially on my 5.0. Windang was pretty good. Over head high waves. North West is perfect cross (nnw) to cross-off (nw) at Windang except for that phucking wall. It will ruin sailing there soon because it is right where the wind usually funnels in Southerly and northwest directions.

Well I had a 4.1 up so lol at the 5m :o Waves must have been a bit bigger down there, probably chest high at most up North. I considered going down there probably should have, it's a far better spot in that direction. It was okay where I was while it was N but as it swung N/NW, NW (way cross off) the break gets sheltered a bit by the dunes.

And yeah that wall :( Will it at all be sailable once it's finsihed? Maybe a bank will form up off it's northern side? Guess it will be pretty high :(

I'm getting rid of all my sails bigger than a 4.0m
I've decided 62 knots is my favourite conditions. Might go out when it hits 50.

yeah that wall is phucked. a few of the backup locations will have to become the main ones soon.
For southerlies, we'll have to take over Peggys completely (all 2 or 3 of us).
Best hope for Windang is for a bank to form off the end of the wall when its done, and for wind to funnel between the island and the end of the wall. Getting out might be tricky. will be gusty near the surf club.

Around Bellambi point is the go. Every direction covered between the pool and east corrimal.

I went out at Pittwater on the other side of Palm Beach. Been sailing there for over 20 years now and I don't think I have EVER seen the kind of conditions that were happening out there. At one stage I was taking a breather in waist deep water and I was witnessing small eddies of wind lifting plumes of water and then throwing them down on us in sheets. It was amazing to watch. It was also getting plain dangerous out there so I decided one more run was the order of the day and time to pack up. Typically though that was the one run that I got catapulted probably the most violently I have ever been in 23 years of windsurfing. After being picked up off the water by what felt like one of those 62knot gusts you were talking about qwerty I got slammed and thrown so hard I did not know which was up. I was twisted on my harness line and still hooked in as a result. When I effectively came to I discovered i had a very sore head from it hitting my mast or boom or both for that matter and I was now standing in the middle of the centre panel of a now dead 4.5m sail. I also had a lovely gash in my right arm from where it had rubbed across my harness lines. All in all not too bad a result I guess after hitting my head as hard as I did.
Soooo, anyone got a 4.5m freeride sail they wanna sell cheaply????

I checked out Manly and Collaroy but there was too much west in it. I ended up at the sailing club on Narabeen lake. Thought it would have been useless but was actualy not too bad. Way overpowered on a 5.3m, hit by a huge gust at the same time as hitting a sand bank (had a 20cm fin so was very shallow), slammed into the sand/mud, completely dazzed, checked the mast and sail, all seemed well luckily. I then tried to beachstart (as it was so shallow) but realised i had sheared the boom tube at the clamp.

I went back out but got freaked out about doing it again so didn't have a great end to the day. One of the windiest days I've experienced in Sydney. Now bruised, aching and purchasing a new boom.

Hi Leski,

We aren't crazy, just misunderstood. Sailed at 12 - 1:30. North westers although rare are pretty dam good at a couple of spots, Windang and a secret reef at Shellharbour. OK maybe the secret spot isn't that secret just no one else to sail there with.

If your down this way give us a call.
