Prob not much help, but one of the w/surf mags used to have a section with pics and stories on it...BIG boards, and game gear fishing around the islands up north.

I remember reading a story about a guy who hooked onto a big mack and had a shark hassle him for a couple of hours... There were some great pics though!

yeah I remember Hedgie was into it in Maui with JP. He told an interesting story of hooking up a marlin the size of his longboard only to be trailed by tiger sharks on the way back in.

Hedgie also used to troll around the Fishermans Beach/Long Reef areas as well.
Used an old Mistral Equipe with some pretty heavy duty gear. He had a rod holder bolted just aft of the dagger board well and a cargo net on the front. The end of a baseball bat for a club and several knives stashed on the boom and board.
He got some pretty impressive fish too!!!!

i'm planning on doing some wind fishing this week on the easterlies.
Any ideas or help??

The board of choice will be a jp funster 160.

I figure i'm gunna get some lures aiming for something smallish. ( salmon are coming soon i hear)
I think i'll just set up a line off the handle on the back of the board coz a rod prolly aint going to be the go. so i'll keep the line wound up on a hand reel untill i'm off the beach a bit.
I'm going to get a knife i can strap to my ankle.
Will have my aquapack with gps and phone in it. As well as flare in lifejacket. Will try to stay this side of rotto :)

only things i'm not sure of are:
1. storage of a reasonable catch
2. killing fish without destroying the soft deck (might need a chopping board)
3. avoiding putting too much fish blood into the water (Bucket with a lid??)

anyone else keen to join??? prolly going to go tuesday or wed morning.

I'm keen to go! Unfortunately I think I will be a bit far off to make it to Perth. I've just started to setup a starboard Start with a Game rig on the back. I'm going to use a back pack to store my fish in but am also considering some kind of a net or esky on the front (fortunately with the start its got about the same deck space as a Bertram 25!). Let me know how you go Bertie! I will post up a pick of my setup as soon as i've finished.

I remember the story of the guy in hawaii doing a downwind blast and passing behind a yatch that was trailing a lure. Got tangled up in it then dragged behind with hook in hand as there was no one on deck. maybe 15 years back?

It was probably 18-20 years now, saw the magazine's (Sailwind Quarterly or Freesail) pics of the guy's hand with around an 8/0 hook well and truly through it...made my eyes water and sent a chill up my spine. Apparently no-one was on deck and probably asleep not to hear the reel screaming. The guy saw the line cross his board and he reached over to flick it off but obviously too late. Rest of the story was unclear...how he sailed back amazes me.

I became paranoid about racing out to yachts and jumping their wake after that.

that story was about a guy in oz who crossed a big boats wake and got caught on a trolled lure, and then bit through the 60 lb leader.

not a lot to do with windfishing.

If you fall in all that fish blood would make a tasty shark attractant, it would be akin to being a cracker with with your favourite topping ...why not do what spear fishermen do and attach the catch to a float on a long cord (10m?), but instead of a net or wire ring use a sealable small drum or something torpedo shaped so it won't affect your speed too much. Drag it around like a sailboat tender from the rear strap with a quick release knot just in case... (shiver).

Alvey make one of the only totally seawater resistant reels, they come in little sizes too. Could just be the trick, tough as buggery and relatively cheap too. Then again eBay sell real cheap 6-bearing eggbeater reels too, who cares if they buggered up after a year or two even after a freshwater wash after use.

but windfishing is really cool if you set yourself up to do it properly.

you need a big stable board and a 45 degree rod holder screwed into the rear footstrap inserts, a decent rod and reel with good drag (hooking anything at more than 6 knots will result in a break off without drag), a gaff and a priest (club) attached like an uphaul to the front of the mast with a quick release clip, not to mention a vertical rod holder inserted into the deck that you can place the rod when you are holding the leader about to gaff the fish and a bag attached to the board to put the fish in so it does not cook in the sun or trail blood all the way home.

i'll try to find some photos, i caught a few tuna at palmy reef gold coast years ago windfishing, top fun.

I do LBG fishing and tuna are a handful even off the rocks let alone on a board, I don't boat fish so I don't know what happens when you troll but it sounds like a job for a reel with a lever drag or something like a Baitrunner (excellent reels) that you can freespool but control the line feed. I know what happens when you spin though and that's an instant rush....which reminds me tuna should be on now around here! woohoo! Better be a better season than last year though.

Love to see the set-up for this windfishing caper, an ole HiFly 500(?) would be perfect me thinks, size of a small boat and I doubt anyone would cry if one had to drill holes in it. I'd be more comfortable with the club and gaff fitted into pockets sewn into the lower luff pocket....interesting.

I can give you a answer on #3.

Pore some rom or other high alcohol liquor in the fish geals and it die instantly, probably as un drunk and happy fish. No blood no sharks...

Cheers and good luck whit the fishing.
