Does anyone know of a company who insures windsurfers for loss of kit, physical injury etc? I have just looked into getting health insurance and it doesn't cover extreme sports - which is really the only way I'll pick up injuries (and why I was going to get it).

Any ideas appreciated!

Thanks

Will your insurer include it in your house and contents insurance?
Just don't tell them it was stolen off the beach or from your car.

Don't know about physical injury. Maybe you could get income protection insurance in case you are too injured to work.

Joining one of the associations (eg. NSWWA) will get you public liability cover for when you have to run over bogan inbred westies on lilo's at Gerroa during summer.

Oddly enough I just had a call from a health insurance company that says windsurfing isn't an extreme sport. Don't know if i agree with that!

Problems I had with SGIO (WA) a couple of years ago.
They told me they would not cover my gear in home/contents insurance as it was 'boating equipment' according to their computer. I tried to explain to the ditzy 17 y/o dopey chick the difference between 1981 vintage gear and my new wave stuff and she didn't get it. Likewise her supervisor called Khamahl Abdul Fahaistafa Mohammed or something.

So I treid a couple of marine insurance mobs: Nope. They reckon it is sports gear.

Rang back SGIO, still no go. I told them my stuff is secured in a locked garage and a thief could not carry more then one item away, most burglars don't drive a car to the burg etc, still no good. So I asked them if they would cover my (hypothetical) $5000 race mountain bike, unsecured, on the back patio. A thief could walk thru the gate and ride it away..... predictable response "Yes, no worries". How about my windurf gear, same value, can't be as easily moved.... "No".

Renewal on house contents come sup few years later, after they have been taken over by NRMA NSW so maybe a change? Asked the gal on phone... will you cover my WS gear? "Yes no problems, if it is at your home" Asked them to specify that on the policy and there it is.

Big pissoff though when poms have a few insurance co's that will cover you for about a million pounds personal liability if you hit someone sailing, plus theft of gear from inside your car or at home, for 40 quid a year.

Yeah good point. I should stop filling in forms with my forum name!

Mark, I used to have that sort of insurance in the UK, it was good. They insure any windsurf kit that was locked but not if it was stolen at night from a van. Over in the UK you always hear/get told you should have a million pounds liability cover. They also replace broken kit it you can make it look like someone drove over it in a carpark! Nice.

I know some insurers specifically won't cover sailboards, like RACV. Sailboards are specifically mentioned in the policy not to be covered as contents. I looked into this last week when I was considering changing from QBE to RACV. The first thing I ever try to work out when looking at house and contents cover is whether my boards are covered. Don't give a stuff if some of my wife's collectable crap gets flogged QBE exclude from coverage "watercraft exceeding 3 metres in length..." (see the policy document if your mind is sharp but you want it dulled http://www.qbe.com/australia/western/pdf/Contents%20policy.pdf ). Seems to also cover personal liability if I stack into someone as cover is excluded for liability arising from the use of watercraft exceeding 3 metres, ie coverage not excluded arising from use of watercraft less than 3 metres. Are you still with me????
But I expect most policies wouldn't cover you for "portable items" like sailboards when not at your premises, unless you've bequeathed your firstborn to them. Too high risk. Enjoy the bedtime reading!!

here my 5 cents.

I had my car stolen from the beach a few years back. The thiefs took sails, boards, kite gear you name it.

Insurance for both the car and home contents was NRMA.
Sporting equipment was listed under home content insurance.

This was their response:
1) we cover the car to the full insured value
2) we cover the contents of the car not listed under your car policy upto $300
3) we don't cover your windsurf or kite equipment because these are listed under your home contents insurance, as they are removable items you should have listed them as such to be insured off premises. This however will incure a higher insurance premium.

I ended up getting the car back after police found it at a robbery. I also got some of the windsurf gear back becaues the crocks dumped in a lane way in Marrickville and a cafe owner was nice enough to hand it into the police. They tracked me down because one of the board bags had my addresses written on it with permanent marker. The gear worth about $4.5 k was gone.

My advise would be to try out an insurance broker. You might pay a 5% premium but they can provide a package which covers your needs.

Also, mark all your belowing with some form of marker. Police recommends the first number/ letter of your license and the first number/ letter of your passport.

List every single high value item with serial number, replacement value and copy of reciepts with your insurer. This will make disputes easier.

Also, in my experience QBE seems to be willing to insure higher risk items. IE. I have a 365 days world wide business travel insurance with them which covers laptops and camera equipment upto $15k left in parked cars. Everyone else either didn't cover theft from cars or only to a value of $1.5K.

To everyone reading this. Let's help out our fellow sailors and simply don't buy used gear unless we know the person is actually a sailor. Our sport is relatively small in Australia and we know most people in our area. If you see or hear of someone offering an unbelievably cheap to good to be true deal report it in this forum. I think most people know who had what stolen when.
