I have just got back from cocos and took heaps of photos in the water and from the beach. The only advice I can give is use a very long lense +200 so you can zoom right in and if shooting from the water make sure the lens does not have water drops on it.

Yet to test the mast mount I have designed for adjustable head sails but hope to get it together this weekend.

If you want an underwater camera I would recomend a 40m rated case and a good camera inside. I have a Canon Ixus 850 which is good. Any of the guys who took the Olympus water proof cameras paid more than I did for a case and camera combined and were limited to 10m depth. One guy also had issues with grit in the lens mechanism that looked pretty terminal. Bad news for a $500 camera that was only a couple of weeks old. I will post some of the in/underwater stuff tonight.

As I predicted previously Canon just announced their new Canon 40D. It's a much improved follow up model to the 30D. Better Image processor, higher frame rate, higher pixel count, higher sensor sensitivity, sensor cleaning. All for about the same price as a 30D. Available early September.

How does the 40D rate against the 5D? better check the canon site i guess.
Anyone know if the 5D is gonna be superseded too?
With regards to shutter speed to use, surely it depends on what effect you desire in your shots, frozen action, blurred background etc.

5D is full frame. 40D 1.6 crop sensor. Larger sensor size usually equals better light sensitivity as the same resolution. But it really depends on what you want to use your camera for. I currently use a 5D as my back up/ travel camera. With the right lens it's capabale of producing beautiful images. Handling is better than 20D/ 30D in my opinion. However, it "only" does 4 frames per second. FYI, for commercial work I generally use 1D series cameras. As far as image quality and usability goes the 1D series blows the xxD series away. But the price up there with it.

So far the biggest drawback for me has been the lack of a decent spot meter in the 20D/ 30D. Apparently there now is one in the 40D. How well it works remains to be seen.

rumor has it Canon has a 5D follow up model ready but won't release it until Feb next year. it will have a 16 Mpixel full frame sensor, offer 5fps. If it will offer 6400 ISO remains to be seen.

RE over/ underexpore, this is where the pro level cameras seem to have an edge over the consumer bunch. On the 1Ds II and 1D II I usually manage to get about 1stop +/- freedom if I shoot raw. In JPG it depends on the subject. Ideally you should get the exposure right in camera no matter what.

This is where experience comes in. Especially when you are shooting close up surf shot with lot's of white water the build in light meter often gets confused. You be able to get it right tough with a little bit of trial and error.
