The new Windsurfing WA Committee is meeting on Wednesday the 26th of April and we need your feedback to help us plan the coming year.

What style of events would you like to enter this year? i.e. Slalom, Formula, Wave, Marathon, Freestyle, GPS, Social, Other???

Would you like to attend any social nights? If so how often and what kind of format?

Are you a member of Windsurfing WA? If not what could we do to encourage you to join?

Can you help us with any aspects of running Windsurfing WA? If so how can you help?

What general suggestions do you for us to make Windsurfing WA more beneficial to you?

Any ideas you have heard of overseas and think may work here or a totally new idea.

Tell us what you want and we will see what we can achieve.

Please have a think about these points and send us your response to:- [email protected]
Cheers,

Ian Grose.

In general, I think the association has done a very good job, so well done to all involved for maintaining a high level of activity on every front (race, wave, social). People don't realise the amount of time and dedication it takes, with very little gratitude back :)

Personally, I stopped competing because of family comittment and how precious time is becoming. I just want to maximise my time on water, the little spare i've got. I miss the wave comps, but unless the format changes, I don't think I can afford the time anymore.

From a wave perspective, I'd really welcome a new format where sailing time is maximised not just for the lucky best! There are new formats around, with new technology and innovative approaches which I think should evaluated. It's pretty disheartening to allocate a whole week-end and end-up sailing a 10 minute heat...

My 2-cent worth...

Cheers,
Laurent

Our format at the Tabou this year was totally by the clock.
eg. 10.00 - 11.00 Masters, G-Masters and women
11.00 - 12.00 Opens and Juniors
12.00 - 01.00 Masters, G-Masters and Women
01.00 - 02.00 Opens and Juniors
If the clock said your heat was on. Then it was on. Even if it was 10 knots. If you could catch a wave in your timeslot, you scored.
The judges watched and picked winners. Just in case there was no wind for a 6 man final in each division on the Sunday arvo.
Everyone has equal opportunity to some good hours on the water.
Cheers.

How about a teams event, say 3 on 3, or 3 man tag team, with the 3 best waves and jumps from each team or something like that. That way if you fall, break something etc it doesn't matter as there are 2 other people to back you up. I think it would make people go more radical knowing that it wont matter if they have a big swim. Be more spectacular to watch too.

Also given that there are 3 people to a team there wouldn't be a large number of teams so 2 or 3 round robins with finals could be completed if the conditions were good. For example if there are 30 people, thats 10 teams so only 5 heats for the 1st round as apposed to 15 for a regular event.

It would also get more people into events. Im sure there are many people who whould like to do an event but feel thay aren't good enough so they think they will get eliminated in the first round. But with a team it isn't just them sailing, the load is spread over the team

Just and idea

there are a lot of great points here to be discussed we are in one of the best places in th world to be windsurfing and to be fortunate enough to have a wind surfing club, has to be a bonus. To me i think we should start at the begining and renew the whole format. First it needs to have more social events not necessarily comps but weekend party fun days . Have a look at some of the kite events, kiters will drive hundreds of miles to get to and event but wind surfers wont drive from Perth to Woodies why? Second point i would like to mention is the high cost involved to be a part of this club . First you have to join WWA fair enough , now join Nedlands yc , than pay for every event thats not at Nedlands ( there are quite a few) , than the cost of getting to the events, spending money , gear breakage , the list goes on.
Wouldn't it be nice if there was some sort of prize money - not much say $50 -30-20 for 1,2,3, for each division at the end of the event . Its not much but it is better than a set of harnesslines and a slap on the back . I think if you have a look at these two points make it fun and affordable then i am sure there will be an increase in partisapation.Third point i would like to see some person should have the position to up date the race results on an event by event basis , what's the whole point of having race and wave events if there are no results, it is always good to know how you went . There has been whole seasons go past with out any updates .

Ian

I understand you are (to be?) the president of WWA. Do you think that your position as an importer/retailer may bias WWA toward certain products?

I'm always suprised how many sailors go to the NSW Wavesailing comps. I check out their website quite often & feel there is a big emphasis on the fun side of things. These guys seem to have dialled into a good vein.

I think events that were more fun/social orientated would be appealing to the ilks of myself and my compatriots, geuss you'll always need something to determine who can sail at an elite level and give those up and comer's something to strive for?

Plus admin could be better as I sent my cheque in last year and didn't recieve anything in return? Have been too lazy to see if cheque was cashed??

I suppose i am a little different to most, but it is one of my favourite things to pack up and head off for a weekend with like minded people. A different location with some good friends is one of the greatest rewards available. I spent 20 years racing Hobies all over the world. The thing that kept me interested the most was the opportunity to travel and be with a group of mates in any corner of the planet. I live in Queensland, but i travel to all the NSW events. Sometimes i can do 3000km for a weekend. The main reason is to have a sail with 50 guys and a refreshing beverage afterwards. Sure, my sailing has improved dramatically. But the real reward is the new friends who windsurf and i now have the opportunity to travel the globe again with some good friends.
PS. The Tabou Wave comp in QLD does give away $3000 in cash each year. See you there!!!

I second all this . I've never join a WWA event in 5 years but I join NSW wavesailing association in the first season, (although I've only managed to enter only one event). The atmosphere is pretty relax and good fun, check the website it says it all. I will definitetly join in next year and try to do all the comp.
Even on a normal day at the beach, people are pretty friendly and there is a pretty good atmosphere on the spot too (beers sessions after wavesailing etc...)
So I think it is just a matter of changing the style of the WWA.
Maybe someone should create a WA wavesailing association and have a more fun and social approach to the comp and events...

by the way, I remember Shmage proposed the team event last year so why was this still not included? it's a pretty cool idea!

Slalom/Marathons- 20 minute fixed time all-in heats. Figure 8 course of reasonable length, so theres less of those scary gybes that put guys off. The result is determined by the number of laps you do, counted by someones on the start/finish marker. Its fun, everyone is racing together, theres carniage, and its not all over at the first mark!!! Way less races to organise, and plenty of time for breaks in between.

The international slalom format is great, but it only works when more than a few guys want to do it.

Easier venue: South beach is great for full on challenging slalom, and an easy spot to rig, BUT its not much fun unless you are into getting punished. Flatter water- eg Woodmans Pt or Cockburn Sound is easy to get to, and offers more forgiving conditions than other coastal metro locations.

Speed events are always popular. Everyone can play and you dont need to gybe.

my 2c

PS: Thanks guys for putting your time in!

I like the Kiting crews idea of social downwinders,

Organise a day
Figure out how to get transport from rigging to destination for vehicles or people (the tricky bit)

And a Barbie at the end

Good crew, good vibes, no stress
