What windsurfing gimmick can you think of that has been the windsurfing equivalent of the one hit wonder?

I remember the retracting fin. It had a metal spring so when you hit reef or sand it retracted. So you can imagine sailing along at 30 km/hr and losing the effect of the fin... needless to say it didnt take off!

Winged fin (like AUS2 winged keel)

Dimple bottoms (like dimples in golf balls...... didn't catch on with surfboards either)

Showin ya age like me........

How about aluminium masts....... About 1990 that was all a North or Rushwind race sail would rig on (according to them!)
Then North had the weird mix n match thing with an alum base and a glass top. Bvgger me they rigged aweful but for some reason "flex tip" really appealed .... probably because "twist" had been discovered, and flex tip implied more twist = good.

start with fins eh,
the football fin,
the sock fin,
the fence fin,
the canard fin,
the slot fin.

agreed all were searching for variations on a theme, but they all sucked due to poor foil and materials basically.
did make a variation on the footy fin once that we called "the mermaid raper" leave its outline to your imagination!
but it kept spearing jellyfish.

i used to love aluminim race masts, heaps better than fibre glass. then carbon was used and aluminium vanished.

tandem windsurfers
tunnel bottom speed boards
windglider (hang glider/windsurfer from the gorge)
thrusters
zippered sail for changing down while on the water
kite surfer [}:)]

gestalt, it was the wind weapon from the gorge and you could be sure to jump high and come down like a mouse in a glass bottle being thrown against a wall!

andre lefebvre's sail with some kind of stunt kite attached to the top to promote extra hang time as endorsed by robby naish! what a loser that guy was!

the sodim salsa board which at 3.2m long had fins protruding out the side of it under your arse to stop spinout!!!!!

and de vries sails (also by the euro legend andre lefebvre) had the race sail with solid foam blocks that you shoved your mast inside and it resembled a downhill speed skiers legs with a girls labia attached.

that zipper sail was a classic!!

maybe a bit more mainstream, but how about:

twinsers (still around apparently?)

soft foam-tail boards (Drops. I still have one)

those little rubber flaps at the back of race boards

crash pop-off footstraps

Hypersonic was/is hardly a gimmick.

Hollow boards- many have tried aerodyne, airinside and stringer (what ever happened to them?) just to name a very few.

One that I love to hate- Neilpryde sheer tips.

Mkseven, am with you on the "NP sheer tips"
From memory think Nebbian or Gestalt isn’t a fan of them either.
Bloody things fail at a sneeze and god knows what the concept ever was, but am sure it never came to fruition. Pity as I have a Diablo that goes well for age but has one of these on it
Keep two spare in my kit, can now change them in about 3 minutes.
Even had one other approach me, looked at the Diablo and came back with a spare he had in his kit he never used, and gave it to me with a sympathetic look on his face

Mineral1 I cut all my sheer tips off- from top batten to head cap. Then tape the monofilm edge, worked perfectly and no more broken sheertips. They did look awesome but NP really needs a lesson in engineering certain things.

I got my first windsurfer in 1981 when I was 8. It was a Dufour and it was massive. It needed 2 people to carry it. The daggerboard was made of wood and had a bit of rope on it so when u got planing u had to bend down, yank out the daggerboard and put the rope over your shoulder to carry it. The boom was also wooden and was looser than a kings cross hooker.

I'll put my money on Jenna de Rosnay.

Actually I think Jenna had the best EVERYTHING in windsurfing at that time.

The constant curve mast...remember them.
Chairmans origional van extension oh and home made downhaul.
Special tool to unscrew mast foot.
That F2 with the see through nose panel...never actually seen one except in mags.
The watering can to clean gear.
dual harness lines it was like a line within a line at two lenghts short to get going and long once you were on the plane.
I know a lot of people like the adjustable outhaul but they never became really popular.
Mast tip extensions...base extensions work well but i never had a good tip extension.

I'm pretty sure it's on the old "Tradewinds" vid.

But mainly, I have memories......aaahhhhh, Kelby. She was just so sweet. And Dana; and Choice Joyce. Oh, and Susan Gedayloo.

(and I hasten to add, of course, that none of them can match my g.f.....just thought I'd better drop that in, in case she's checking the winds for Tuesday. Otherwise I'll look like this;
